Disorganized rant about writing and teenagers

Feb 12, 2011 00:42

I'm cross-posting this from Anti-Shur'tugal for those of you who know me from Facebutt. Because I can.

In lunch I had an argument with a few people involving fantasy. Their position was "why does it have to be realistic, people read what they want" and Paolini got this far because people had interest in what he had to say.
I tried to explain that it pisses me off that Paolini got lucky- he wrote a low-grade daydream book and got a publishing deal while I actually work at this and it's doubtful anything will ever come of it, especially since the world doesn't like what I'm writing now.
The answer was that my writing is clearly just not interesting enough or that I' m not trying hard enough and it's not just "overnight success." Anyways, obviously no one reads fantasy any more, it's just sooo overdone.
-_-;
I don't really know, but this is just aggravating. They blow it off like I'm just going through a phase and it doesn't really matter. But it's not a passing fancy, this is what I want to do with my life. It's simply discredited because of crappy fantasy writers who make it cliched and oversone. There's no respect for this, even though constructing a good fantasy novel requires plenty of effort- more effort than these people put into their homework.
When you're this young and have a passion, especially one like this, people think you're just weird. Just another thing about me that people think is freakish- I want to do something with my life and I'm not waiting for the "real world" to start to get there. Since when was a good work ethic a bad thing?
