As always people, it's
Ok, high school for me was nothing like any version of high school ever shown on TV. I went to a Catholic all-girls school. We didn't really have bullies. The only time I ever saw a girl get ganged up on was when this one girl who today would probably be classified (she had no social skills, and had a habit of saying things that weren't appropriate) made a racial slur on the school bus and got threatened by a large group of other girls. She never came back to school. Actually, a lot of conflict in high school was racially or ethnically motivated...but that's a post for another time...
Anyway, so tv shows/movies about public high schools? I can never tell how much they "get" it or not. (The one I work at in the summer is a private one too). But I have a feeling they exaggerated a LOT during this episode.
Some things I enjoyed:
- Jensen in shorts! Is it a goal to get him to show off his legs this season?
- Sam and the inspirational teacher. Why is it always an English teacher? We've never heard about Sam's writing before now (heh, maybe he's writing fanfic on the side...) I was gonna ask why it's never a Math teacher, but then I remember that episode of the Wonder Years that I didn't GET till years later. Actually, I still don't quite get it. Anyway...
- Little Sam kicking ASS. Hah! Hello fanon!
- Little Colin Ford. I LOVE that kid! I love his Sam!
- Tean!Dean's huge cell phone. Back then he was probably the only kid in high school with one.
Some things I didn't quite like:
- teen!Dean. He seemed to be channeling James Dean way too much for my taste. Although, he was absolutely adorable with Sammy. And I get that the James Dean thing was supposedly on purpose, Dean's walls that he puts up - yes, another anvil. (And once again, it cracks me up that he screws up relationships with girls in favor of the relationship with his brother. Hmmm....*adjusts wincesty glasses*)
- Some of the pacing was weird to me and it was like there wasn't really a complete story on either side. I want to know about poor Barry!
In the beginning I was all "Poor Sam" and then "Poor Dean" when he gets shot down by the girl who resembles his mom (hmm, hello Anvil again), and then "Poor Sam" again when the teacher asks if Sam is happy...
What would make Sam happy at this point? Does he have the capacity for it? Could he stop hunting, even once Lilith is dead with whatever rationalization he made in his mind in last week's episode? If so, could he turn his back on his brother or would Sam want Dean with him? If he did stop hunting, WHAT would we do? These questions and more on Epee's LJ...As the LJ turns....
