Friday:
When we arrived at O'Hare airport, the plane was listed as "on time" (4:11 departure). By the time I got to the gate, it was delayed to 4:27, and while I was waiting, it was further delayed to 4:35. We didn't even start boarding until after 4:30, and they hadn't been prepared to board the strollers and the passenger in a wheelchair. We made up some of the lost time thanks to a strong tailwind, but we still landed late. Jennifer and her dad picked me up at the airport, and then we went to blockbuster (we rented The Village and De-Lovely) and then home for dinner.
Saturday:
Brandy, Jennifer's collie, woke me up before 6 by poking me with her nose. Once everybody was awake and done with breakfast, we headed out to the NC Renaissance Faire for the day. After wandering around for a while, Jennifer found a booth selling stuffed dragons with stiff wires embedded in them so they hold whatever position you leave them in (Mr. Cook: "So, they have posable thumbs?"). We ended up stopping by that booth several times before Jennifer actually bought a dragon. At one point, Jennifer tried on a Victorian corset (why there was a Victorian corset at a Renaissance Faire, I don't know). While walking around near the far end of the faire, we came across a street musician: Efenwealt Wystle, the No Holds Bard. We listened to him play Do-Wop Greensleeves and The SCA Driving Song. I bought one of each of the three CD's he was selling, and Jennifer bought a sampler CD. Shortly afterwards, we went followed Mr. Cook into the bar area to hear Master Wystle perform. After the fair, we went to buy a riding helmet for Jennifer and then a short grocery run. Jennifer and I made dinner for the two of us when we got home (salad with raspberry dressing and cheese-filled tortellini). We watched some of The Village, but we eventually got bored with it. Then we watched some of De-Lovely (we didn't actually finish it until Monday).
Sunday:
The plan for today was to go to the family's Easter dinner at Jennifer's grandmother's house in the mid-afternoon. In the morning, Jennifer had to go to a riding lesson; her mother and I went to watch. After the lesson, we rushed back to the house because the Easter dinner had since been moved to 1:00 so that there would be time afterwards to watch the Tar Heels' basketball game. I was told, "ACC basketball is like a religion around here." After eating "dinner" (at about 2:00), we all went back into the living room to watch the game. After a while, Jennifer and I took her cousin (also named Justin) to the small lake in the middle of the neighborhood. We wandered around for a while skipping stones across the lake. After dinner, we went back to the house and watched more of De-Lovely.
Monday:
In the morning, Jennifer and I rode with her mother to work in Raleigh, and the two of us walked around the old capitol building, which was only a couple blocks away. Afterwards, we wandered around in the Museum of Natural Science, which was just across the street. We saw a live animal show (about nocturnal animals). After wandering around the museum, Mr. Cook met the three of us for lunch in a cafeteria at a garden store. We then went back to the house with Mr. Cook, stopping at his office so he could take care of some business there. In the evening, the four of us went to dinner at an Italian restaurant in the city. Jennifer and I split a filet mignon (I think we've done that several times now). After dinner, we went back to the house. Jennifer and I finished watching De-Lovely (spent three days on it ).
Tuesday:
The two of us spent a little over an hour wandering around at the mall. We spent some time when we first got there looking around in furniture stores, and we ended in Barnes and Noble (we always end up there at some point ). We were too short on time to stop at Godiva, but I bought Jennifer a raspberry chocolate bar at Barnes and Noble while she was off looking for a book. Afterwards, we stopped back at the house and picked up the dogs to take them for a walk in Duke gardens. Brandy (the collie) had never been to the gardens before, and she wasn't used to the crowds. Bear (the sheltie) had been there before, so he was easier to deal with. Towards the end of our walk through the gardens, we came up to a murky pond whose surface was just below the ground. Brandy stepped into it. We had some difficulty getting her back out, but we managed it. Jennifer guessed that Brandy thought the pond's surface was solid ground (Brandy hadn't seen such a pond before, and the water was dark enough to look like dirt). After we dried Brandy off a bit, we headed back home. Jennifer and I watched an epsiode from a British lawyer show and then made dinner (more tortellini ). Around 6, we left for the airport. After checking my bag, we waited just outside the security checkpoint as long as possible before I left to go to the gate. We started boarding just after I got there, and the flight itself went smoothly. I actually landed early, but Dad was at the airport in time to pick me up after I got my suitcase.
