Surprisingly enough (as you know I love to argue!) I actually agree with so much of this!
I too loved series 1 Mary and pretty much from the same scenes as you did. I've loved her the whole series long nearly and was bitterly defending her in many a forum before series 2 started. The only character I love more than Mary is Matthew! :-)
It gets on my nerves though, when people say they think series 2 Mary is acting out of character. Yes, she has developed, but she's still Mary. She hasn't just grown a heart, she's always had one, we as an audience are just seeing it a lot more.
Have to say though, I do LOVE all the focus on Mary and Matthew, it's really been fantastic to watch, but I do think we need more stories for Mary and Matthew that are independent from each other. I'm also not going to comment on Lavinia or Carlisle - as I'm going to wait and see what happens with them and reserve judgement.
I do agree though, the show has tried a bit too hard to make Mary likeable, we see a bit too much of her caring side, which is probably why some people think she is OOC. I wouldn't mind seeing some more of spunky, pretending to be heartless Mary, but I know that part of her is still there.
As for the future, well, sadly, despite my best efforts, the big episode 5 was revealed to me and I have to admit it has me paranoid. (and I totally get your rant on spoilers! People should be more considerate when they post!) Not for Mary/Matthew, but for the standard of the show. I love DA and I know it can be soap opearish at times, but I think it's going too far into that world now and quite frankly, if it continues, I may actually give up watching. I love DA, but I don't watch soap operas for a very good reason.
I have my own theories on how the Mary/Matthew/Lavinia story will go and lets just say, I don't think Lavinia will be quite so easily deterred and Matthew will feel even more honour bound to stand by her.
I'm afraid I don't really have anything to reply to here because I completely agree with you! (Who are we and what have we done with Laura and Rose?!) :P

Yes, me too! That was one of the main things that drew me to Mary in S01 and while I would love her regardless, I do miss her. Having actually just re-watched S01 and S02 again back to back, I have to say that it all seems much smoother - more of S02!Mary in S01 and more of S01!Mary in S02, but still...

I can't imagine giving up watching, just as I couldn't stop reading HP even when I found the books increasingly badly edited and plotted, because I am dedicated to the fandom and the characters, but I can foresee getting much more irritated, as you are.
