After the fourth reinstall in as many months, I decided that I'd had enough. Would it be stable once everything is set up? Sure. But getting to that point is a herculean effort on this hardware, and there are innumerable ways to hose the operating system while rigging everything together.
So I did something that I have never done before: I bought a copy of Windows. Blasphemy, I know. Even if it was only 15$. I had no choice. I couldn't get scifinder to run in Wine, and no amount of tweaking the kernel or NDISwrapper could get my wifi card working. Also, my voice was getting hoarse.
It's a surprisingly good OS, once you turn off all the crap and install a decent GUI (blackbox, of course). I miss vi, but getting back photoshop makes up for it. If I can just find a way to get windows to stop piling 100mb junk files on the root partition, this could be the start of a happy relationship.
