Day 09 - Best scene ever

Oh, holy Jesus. You're just doing this to torture me, right? Do you remember how hard it was to pick a favorite episode? Now we're going to break it down to SCENES? Well, okay. I've written a lot about BtVS in this meme so far, so I'm going to make things easier on myself and just rule out that show completely.

So I'm going to go with Friday Night Lights, season 1, season finale. Panthers win State! OMG, I stood up and cheered. In my living room. I don't get this excited about the Super Bowl, y'all.

It's kind of crazy how much this show has sucked me in. I didn't bother to watch the first season when it aired, because I thought, "Eh, who wants to watch a TV show about small town Texas high school football?" I saw enough high school football during my marching band years. But then I rented the first season, and I went out and bought the DVD before I'd even finished watching the first disc. That's how much I loved it.

Remember what I said before about how I fall in love with characters? This show isn't about football. It's about people. It's about family and friends and team spirit and supporting each other and banding together to do something incredible. It's about being the underdog. It's about the triumph of victory and the crush of defeat. It's about growing up and being a family and having your heart broken.

It's about love.

And I love these people. I love Coach Taylor and Matt Saracen and Tim Riggins and Smash Williams and I wanted them to win so badly. They'd fought so hard and they'd earned it. I love Tami running onto the field. I love Grandma Saracen and Mama Smash and how their boys have made them so proud. I love seeing Jason Street on the sidelines in his wheelchair, who's fought so hard to win his own battles. Hell, I even love Buddy Garrity.

I also want to talk about this scene, because the thing that hits me more than anything about this show is the Taylor family. I identify with them SO HARD because Julie is 100% me when I was a teenager. My dad was the gruff, stoic, macho guy who terrified my boyfriends (that scene, with Eric and Matt on the patio? With Eric scrubbing the hell out of the grill to get his anger out? OMG) because he was so protective of Daddy's Little Girl. And my mom was a pretty cool mom, even if I thought she was totally lame and stupid most of the time. And so I love watching scenes like this, because it makes me appreciate how much she was there for me, even if I didn't think so at the time.

Honorable Mentions: Gah! I could go with any of a number of West Wing scenes, including President Bartlet yelling at God in Latin, or pwning Governor Ritchie in the Presidential debate, or the Cartographers for Social Equality, or this speech, which makes me tear up every single time, and is indicative of this show's uncanny ability to use the perfect music in a scene. I have to throw in a mention of Fool For Love's punk!Spike, Angel dancing like a loon, How I Met Your Mother's Robin Sparkles video, and... I'm kind of obsessed with this right now.

And the rest of the days, for those who want to play along...
