In which I prove I think too much

So, snickfic recently made a post about Once More With Feeling, which prompted me to watch the "Behind the Scenes" special feature for that episode, which of course made me want to watch a musical. But, as snickfic pointed out, OMWF is pretty damn angsty and depressing. So, instead, I went for my favoritest musical of all time, which never fails to make me laugh ( Read more... )

sometimes i'm random, unironic musical love

Oh, I love this show so much! I started watching it when I was too young to understand half the jokes, and I've pretty much got it memorized by now. :)

I love ITW, but I would not exactly call it angst-free! (I mean, it is Sondheim, after all.) I always thought Joss must have been influenced by Sondheim at least a bit.

Heh, no, definitely not angst-free, but I think the humor is so overwhelming that I find it hard to take the angst seriously. Or maybe I've just seen it too many times, lol.

And yeah, Joss was definitely influenced by Sondheim, though more so with Dr. Horrible than OMWF. I happened to watch Dr. Horrible and Sweeney Todd back to back, and the influence was very, very noticeable.

Wow - good thoughts.

I happened to watch Dr. Horrible and Sweeney Todd back to back, and the influence was very, very noticeable.

Yeah, especially, or at least most particularly, evident in Neil's Musical Commentary number; e.g. "...and what's with all these chords? All these weird choords?..."

I love ITW - saw the Broadway touring production years ago in SF and have the Broadway production on DVD. I think some of the parallels work but the Spike and Angel comparisons are strained for me. Also, what about Jack's mother, where does she fit in? The baker and his wife as Xander and Anya is a great fit though, as is RRH and Dawn. But while the witch has Willow's controlling, dysfunctional relationship thing going on, her arrogance is pretty constant - lacking Willow's humility and insecurity, even before she regains her powers.

Now you've got me hankering to watch ITW again.

No idea. I just matched up the characters where I saw similarities, but I'm obviously leaving out both BtVS and ITW characters that don't fit, as well as characteristics that don't correspond.
