I was traumatized by The Velveteen Rabbit
When I was a kid, I was exposed to this book, and though I don't remember much, what I DO remember is that the kid got sick, so they had to take away all of his stuff and burn it...including this stuffed animal that he loved so much.
So for YEARS when I would get sick, I would refuse to snuggle up with my Howie cuz I didn't want him to be taken away and burned.
When I was sick. When I needed him most.
Later, people told me that it was Scarlet Fever the kid had, a very specific kind of illness, and that they don't just take away your toys when you get sick.
But still...that memory comes up every time I feel nasty, like I do right now: headache, chills, and the sinuses on my left side feel like they're at about 30,000 PSI. That book is evil, and should never be inflicted on small children. I'm just sayin'...
