One week of food: Day 4

Mar 16, 2012 02:02

Today's will be a short post as I am sleepy.

Had a Northern Chinese bowl noodle classic: deep fried pork chops with noodles in soup.

Usually this is a measure of how good a place is, much like a pad thai is a measure of a Thai restaurant, etc.

The place I had it at: Top Shanghai Cuisine Restaurant. When they first opened, they handed out little packets of tissues with a map of how to get to their restaurant on the back. And the front was obviously plastered with their logo.

I had experienced poor service here in the past, mostly because it was very busy, and they didn't staff sufficiently, and the staff were not particularly willing or equipped to smile under pressure. Today was nice, because the woman who served our table actually smiled every time she came over to do something for us. This, sad to say, is a bonus at this place, where at most places, really, it should be a given. I wait tables at a very busy place - there is no excuse.

The food itself: tasty! as usual. Mine was anyway, my mother's less so. With this dish, the pork chops are (deep) fried, and often come in a separate dish so the soup doesn't make the chops all soggy before you eat them. This place did that, although they really breaded and fried to the point where it was obvious the chops had a deep fryer bath, and looked a bit like pieces of fish from fish 'n chips. On the plus side, however, the batter had a hint of curry - a nice original twist on a classic - possibly to cover up the taste of meat that had been previously frozen and wasn't the freshest cut, but, whatever. It worked.
