Thanks to all the leave being used for the wedding and honeymoon, we have no time off between the middle of July and Christmas. (Well, one day for Guido's birthday - handily that's a Friday.)
So we're taking minibreaks when we can. Unfortunately, the opportunities are all a bit bunched up, so we're away this weekend, next weekend and then again at the end of September.
This weekend it's up to Northumberland, although we're actually staying in Scotland on Saturday and Sunday nights. Because we only booked yesterday and we couldn't find a room available anywhere in Northumberland.
We drove up to Newcastle after work this evening. The plan is to potter around Northumberland National Park on Saturday, plus a bit of the Scottish Borders. I rather fancy doing a walk somewhere, and we have to buy some shortbread to take to Germany next weekend. Sunday we'll be up early(ish) to head over to Lindisfarne on Holy Island. (You have to drive over a causeway so we're at the mercy of the tide times. Thankfully they're fairly tourist friendly this weekend.) Then down the coast to Bamburgh Castle. And then Monday pootle home down the coast, Blyth looks like it could be nice. Pop into Ikea in Gateshead (one or two things I want to pick up but not enough to justify us driving all the way to Leeds which is our local) and then home.
Unfortunately the forecast for Saturday is for it to bucket it down. Bugger. So we'll see what we actually end up doing. We drove up through pretty heavy rain.
