I don't get out of the house much (though C is hoping to take me out shopping in Southampton today!) so I don't know what is going on with people, but I don't like what I'm hearing.
B has just read me the report of the reopening of the local post office after having to close temporarily due to threats to and verbal abuse of the staff which has left them feeling unsafe, as well as witch hunts against them and the postmaster on social media!
I have no idea of what is going on here :(
ETA: I've now had a bit of a poke around the interwebs, and read a slightly fuller report including the message put in the PO window and a review left on a review site.
Essentially, this was reported because the High Street Post Office was closed unannounced on Saturday (and the following Monday), with a long note in the window citing the supposed verbal abuse and using the term 'witch hunt' about online activity that has distressed staff. There was notice given that the shop and PO counter was covered by CCTV with audio, and they would now be operating a zero tolerance policy and passing recordings to the relevant authorities in future.
The reporter spoke to 'disgruntled' customers outside, including one who had arranged to pick up a parcel on the day and a postman who hadn't been informed of the closure (if they have items that need signatures etc and there is no answer, they leave a note that it can be picked up at the local PO a few hours later and drop the items in rather than take them to the main sorting office). The PO itself has implied that they didn't know about any of this beforehand, and are now 'working with' the postmaster to get to the bottom of things .
I'm not signed into facebook or anything, and they don't show up on searches, but there was one thing from a review site that said [the reviewer] had always found the post office to polite and friendly - until 'that man' arrived behind the counter. He was rude and unfriendly, and when he was about the other staff were too, although they were much better when he wasn't about.
So it all looks to be a bit of a storm in a teacup. I hope it can be sorted out - by the sound of it, someone may have been throwing their weight around a bit, and certainly not doing things by the book, even if there was some truth to the allegations. With times like they are, I hope it doesn't lead to the closing of the PO counter.
