I had a burnout and a hernia during that year and being at home and not able to do much might have contributed to signing up for a LJ account. So that's one good thing that I got out of that quite horrible year.

ETA: Hit the send too soon *rolls eyes at self*
I had been dragging my heels about any kin if social media untill that year, but the 4 (and two halves) person commitee I was on won the bid for running the 17th UK Filk Convention that year, and I suddenly needed more way of keeping in touch with people, especially as Hotel Coordinator.
Originally planned on this to prove a point to certain regulars about faults and things people were complaining about were because 'you have to let some things slide'. We didn't *preens*

Yes, at that time it certainly was.
So you didn't sign up for something related to fanfiction but to fan music?
I must admit I can't remember how I found out LJ exists. I was following The leaky cauldron site at that time and it might be possible they crossposted people in the HP fandom that where already on LJ.
Was the HP fandom also the reason for you to stay on LJ after your convention?

It's interesting to see how LJ worked/works for people from different countries. You said you already knew a lot of people in RL at LJ when you joined it yourself, while I didn't when I joined and still don't. I might meet someone soon who is also Dutch but I think we are still a tiny minority here.
I know you write, I remember you from the GS100. I only comment and sometimes I post as well, but very irregularly.
And I totally understand you didn't want to comment on fics of people you know in RL, that could turn awkward.
What I like about our HP corner of LJ is that people are nice and respectful to each other. I always feel welcome here regardless the fact I don't post much. And I still encounter interesting stories.
Btw I didn't know you have MS, I only knew you are ill. A friend of mine had MS as well and his energy levels where quite unpredictable. I wish you all the best and if you can use some good vibes, let me know.

Yes, RL contacts from across the UK, Germany, one guy from Belgium and a good number from US or Canada, and I'm still in touch with a few of them despite no longer being active in fandom/reenactment/costumes etc. Really miss that sense of community, especially with the genarally very accepting nature of those involved in Filk, but there is still some of that within this fandom to keep me going :)
Hmph, MS was diagnosed a couple of years ago, looking back I've probably been suffering to one degree or another for 8-9 years. I'm what they call 'progressive', which isn't actually as good as it sounds, and the past 2 weeks have been particularly hard. It is just a matter of myself and my family adapting now. Thank you for the good thoughts :)
