OK, this is going to be kind of truncated as I've got a lot to try to get done today and then I'm like gone for about 3 days.
So on Wednesday I went off to eat at Hibiscus with
nou,
rjw1, and
uon. We decided to try the 7-course surprise menu.
(
And nommyness ensued! )
The bread was good - and I say that as someone who's very fussy about bread. A number of reviews have described it as "excellent". ISTR some of us were also very enthusiastic about the butter.
I didn't enjoy either of the reds enough to feel they were worth the price, though they were perfectly pleasant. I thought the sommelier was great; quite chirpy and cheerful, but not annoyingly so. Very nice chap.
Did you post about the exploding carrot amuse-bouche at the time? Am intrigued.
I was also very happy with the pollack carpaccio, but then I really like fish. One of the things that pleased me about the menu as a whole was that it didn't have too much meat in it. The John Dory was another highlight for me; perfectly cooked fish, and I found the gherkin sauce quite amusing (not sure if it was supposed to be serious or silly, but it doesn't really matter).
Loved the foie gras and brioche dish, and I hadn't been expecting to, since I'm not a great fan of rich food - but it wasn't overly rich. Not sure how they managed that. I was less happy about the pomegranate seeds, and I still don't understand why they were there.
The desserts were not very dessert-like, really, but this was good for me as I don't like desserts.
I think I might have to go and take advantage of their three-courses-for-£25 lunch deal before they realise what an insanely low price this is, and double it.
