On Wednesday afternoon, in the baking sun, a hundred climate campers secretly converged and occupied the site for this year's Camp for Climate Action. It's a stunning piece of land, a ridge of golden meadow with long views onto the river Meday and the Thames. A kilometer away Kingnorth power station's chimney blinks red lights at us, like eyes of an ominous monster, aware of the fact that in a week's time, thousands of climate campers will converge towards it on the mass day of action.
Dozens of marquees are slowly rising, neighbourhoods are arriving from all over the country, solar panels are popping up, a central kitchen is dishing out three delicious meals a day and compost toilets are being built. A vision of a sustainable self- managed world is being put together piece by piece in a field in Kent, less than 45 minutes from London. All are welcome to come down as soon as they can to join in with the creation of Climate Camp 2008, in preparation for the opening on Sunday, 3rd August, when hundreds more will come and begin the week of workshops and action preparations.
Despite losing a football match with a local team (7-1) and a police incursion onto the site on Thursday afternoon, morale is high. But be prepared to be searched when you arrive, remember you don't need to give a name or address (unless you are a driver) and be aware that police are taking all kinds of things off people that they think can be used for actions, ranging from kids crayons to bike-locks.
