i'd either throw them in an old gift bag (my mother keeps everything so they accumulate in our basement) or wrap them in newspaper, especially the comics section.
i am also leaning towards giving more non-tangible gifts, like a meal at a favourite restaurant or a day pass for the climbing gym or a donation for a cause that the person is interested in.
or...make stuff. i knitted two presents and am painting a 3rd.
oh, and regarding recycling wrapping paper, well you can either keep it to wrap gifts in later or check to see if your city recycles it. i know mine (toronto) does.
I don't exchange gifts with anyone anymore, but when we were kids my mum would get us to re-use wrapping paper. When we were old enough, we had to un-peel the sellotape really carefully and my mum would put the paper away for next year.
Iron the newspaper before you wrap so there will be less ink on people's fingers.
I use newspaper, sometimes I add stripes with a marker, like highlight every other column of the stocks. What bug me is that people feel so obligated to get gifts, I mean it's one thing when people need something, but why is there so much pressure to buy some new object that may or not be used and could just end up in the trash after a short while?
I've tried making all my gifts, but this year I was too lazy.
Some years we'll have a "gift truce" and just not get anything. That won't work with my in-laws, though.
I'm trying to get people to just get one gift, one nice gift and used gifts are fine, even wanted. When people ask me what I want I say something used!
(you get more interesting things that way anyhow!)
Yeah, I was quite lazy too. Which is why for 2008, I plan to make gifts throughout the year in anticipation of Christmas. Cos really, it's the last minute shopping that makes us buy something expensive and useless as a gift, I think.
I don't celebrate Christmas or any holidays, really, but I do give gifts for my friends' birthdays and I discovered Blooming Wrapping Paper at Uncommon Goods. Not only is it biodegradable but it's also a great additional gift to those who like to garden. They also have Blooming Greeting Cards and Blooming Holiday Gift Tags. Unfortunately, I didn't discover these until too late for one of my friends' birthdays in January. Oh well.
This sounds VERY interesting! There's no picture or anything, though, and I'm having trouble picturing it in my head. Do you have a picture of maybe a present wrapped in it, or something?
I do love the Green Field Paper Company (am not spamming, just a happy customer) and it's the Grow-a-note paper I've had experience with (lovely stuff) and from their latest catalog, it does look like there is recycled wrapping paper too...

That's awsome.
But the kind in me hates losing all of the fun ripping open of the presents. That's why I like newspaper.
