DENNY CRANE

boston legal is one of the best tv shows EVER.

i love this show. i actually love william shatner now (who plays denny crane: megalomaniac, fanatic republican, powerhouse lawyer and legend). (i used to make a face whenever my mom proclaimed him as the only legit star trek main man) and of course, i grew up watching murphy brown, and it's wonderful to see candice bergen (shirley schmidt) in a role that's so murphy but now she's an attorney. cool. and james spader (alan shore)! he was the best thing that ever happened to the practice since dylan mcdermot... which is why when the practice ended, he got his own show. haha

boston legal boasts of a heavyweight ensemble cast. as with any david e. kelley creation, they're all quirky and endearing. it's ally mcbeal, picket fences and the practice rolled into one. although i find it closest to the practice, boston legal takes lawyering to the extreme. BL pushes legal and ethical boundaries but it's quick to undercut the occasional moments of heavy drama by injecting something funny, suprising and unexpected.

denny crane is larger than life, but he's also struggling with the legend he cultivated for himself. far from the brilliant lawyer he once was, he's incredibly forgetful and loopy, gets himself into trouble all the time. he thinks he's the whole world, the main star and solely responsible for crane, pool and schmidt's success (and he is the rainmaker). his answer to everything - even and most especially in court is, well, denny crane. he and fellow oddball and brilliant attorney alan shore are best friends - "we're flamingos!". alan is a jaded attorney with a heart of gold, something he never ever admits, even to himself.

being a spinoff of the practice and a hybrid of other david e. kelley shows has its drawbacks, though. unlike the practice, where bobby o'donnell et al. are criminal defense lawyers dealing with murky issues, BL is straightforward civil, criminal and corporate practice. it takes on gray areas in the law, but i've noticed that BL makes stronger political statements (many episodes are devoted to anti-war sentiments, something i'm sure is not too popular with bush). although it's not fantasy and love-addled as ally mcbeal, the extremes in terms of the characters' quirks and foibles to a certain degree is a variation of ally. an example would be the touching friendship between alan and denny, who by themselves, are extreme versions of richard fish and john cage. the strange bond and deep friendship between the two is the heart of the show.

sa kakanood ko ng BL, running joke na namin ni xam ay pag nagtanong siya o pag nag-uusap kami, ang sinasagot ko minsan ay "denny crane."

xam: enuh, ano difference ng real action at right in rem?
enuh: blah blah blah... (in my best denny crane voice) denny crane.

xam: enuh, anong gagawin ko?!
enuh: blah blah blah... denny crane.

xam: enuh, inaantok ako! blah blah blah
enuh: ... denny crane.

BL is also very very helpful if you're a law student (and lawyer haha) because it's educational. textbook. you get to grasp legal concepts and remedial stuff because the scriptwriters explain things so well. haha. it's a must if you want to really know the law better.

or what the heck, denny crane.

isa ito sa mga tinututukan ko sa tv noong nagrereview ako sa bar. dahil rin siguro dito, pumasa ako. hahaha.

anyway, my point is:

DENNY CRANE.

bwahaha. =)

p.s.

got my score in the bar exam. not surprisingly, my lowest score is in tax - 100% creative writing and my finest hour haha. the biggest shock of my life was learning i performed best in crim, and on any given day i will tell anyone that it's my waterloo. olats ako sa crim sa totoong buhay. but according to my mom, i have a criminal mind. hahaha. anyway, i surprise myself sometimes. for some reason, on the various standardized tests i've taken, i always do better in math than i do science. and i have pretty lousy math skills. well. that's life. haha.
