Put Yourself Out There

Wednesday is officially TV night now that So You Think You Can Dance and Work of Art combine to show a sweltering mix of competition, individuality, creativity, and the value of risk-taking in executing these quick projects with even faster judgments. The quality of elements themselves sometimes gets ignored when the context is either oversaturated or simply not meshing with the essential elements being offered by the heart of an artist or performer. When given a situation where you absolutely must deny a particular player any further moves in the game, you can memorialize their performance while at the same time acknowledging the cause of their shortcoming, whatever was missing. But we should still take the care of noticing what we're missing now.

Seeing the knowledgeable expert among the group depart signals to us that without calmingly measured, learned guiding eyes and hands in the mix, the individually symbolic elements, as they were, must be released without inhibition or censorship, as experimentalism takes over to realize the pushing open of the envelope that everyone is demanding. Abdi came a lot closer to "somewhere" than he could have this time around, but it all comes down to choosing details that complete the big picture on their own, and picking which one of those to put center stage. Once you've gathered a critical mass of these qualities, the essence of each new piece can be tasted more thoroughly. By giving the artists a very similar set of materials to use I think the producers got what they wanted by revealing the inner differences amongst the group. I was really expecting even more out-there media but I'll still have to wait. With painting I guess you can create anything though.

That said I really think everyone reading should take the time to watch this show, if only to have an accurate picture of what is contemporary art in your head. If you can draw in your sketchbook during commercial breaks then you've got either less parents or more desires around than I do. I may post about my personal projects fairly soon so we can speak of more important matters. :o) Stay tuned.
