Hoo boy. Let's see if I can remember how to Journal, shall we?
I'm signing up for
chocolateboxcomm for the first time, so here I am with a tiny keyboard hooked up to my phone so that I may type this entry. (please excuse what will probably end up being many typos. Also, wow, my html is rusty.)
Be forewarned - since Chocolate Box requires character pairing based prompts, this entry will be... substantiative.
It's been a looong time since I've written one of these. I guess I will start with my general likes. Some favorite tropes are mutual pining, identity porn, foe!yay, girl saves boy, role reversal, competence kink. I also love AUs of every stripe.
General DNWs for this set of fandoms are noncon, incest, and humiliation kink.
My requests: (I've marked all of these with the fic tag only, but that's just because I have NO IDEA how to prompt for art.)
TV: Burn Notice
Sam Axe/Fiona Glenanne/Jesse Porter/Michael Westen - I've been rewatching this show while I try to teach myself to crochet & knit (why fail at one when you can fail at both simultaneously, amirite?) and I just love these guys and their fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants competence. The bad guys are always like "I'm gonna shoot each of you in the face 10 times" and the team is like, "well, we have a toothpick and a half-eaten thing of yogurt, so... good luck, I guess?" I love little AU snippets of the team, like if they're in SPAAAAACE or in a magical realism/supernatural/urban fantasy, or if they're, like, high school teachers (Fiona + chemistry, though!!!)
TV: Eureka
I recently bought all the DVDs & did a re-watch of this, too, so I apologize for the FEELINGS.
Allison Blake & Grace Munroe Grace was a latecomer to the show, and so many of her storyline were tied up with Henry. I'd love to see a snapshot of how these 2 support each other or piggyback off each other's ideas or how they Escape It All and manage to have a ladies night.
Allison Blake & Jo Lupo I'd love to see a slice of life story about these 2 solving an "oh no, these 2 sciences mixed again!" problem, set at any time during canon (maybe even pre-canon)
Deputy Andy/Douglas Fargo Yeah, so, I shipped this from the moment Deputy Andy popped into existence and Fargo had the "this is Christmas morning AND my birthday" face. So when I think of Andy, I tend to think Ty Olsson. I like the way his steady, everything's going to be all right presence contrasts with Fargo's geeky nervous energy. (And also: size difference.)
Douglas Fargo/Isaac Parrish/Holly Marten This show had so many love triangles. SO. MANY. And not a single poly relationship. So sad! This could easily be either a threesome or V-shaped poly -- what I find interesting about this dynamic is that Fargo seems to hate Parrish much more than Parrish dislikes him, and that Holly seems to genuinely like Parrish. So what is it that Holly gets about Isaac that Fargo doesn't?
Isaac Parrish & Zane Donovan OK, so in the post-time travel timeline, these two seem to be the persona non grata guys banished to the non-lethal weapons basement. I'd love to see a slice of life with them grudgingly being bros because no one else in the entire world can stand to work with either of them.
Jo Lupo & Holly Marten These 2 didn't get to interact enough in canon! What is the common ground between a super brainy woman like Holly & a super brawny woman like Jo?
Jo Lupo & Zane Donovan & Douglas Fargo & Holly Marten; Jo Lupo/Zane Donovan/Douglas Fargo/Holly Marten I think of these guys as the shows B-team -- I think they get some funnier/lighter scenes than the A-team, which makes them more #relatable to me. Needless to say, Of Mites and Men has become one of my fave episodes -- they really do learn to work as a team. Like when Zane helps Fargo resurrect Holly, and Jo walks in on her giving Zane a kiss on the cheek, Zane's like, "uh oh!" but Jo just thinks they're cute. There's no petty jealousy or posturing from either her or Fargo about it.
Allison Blake/Jack Carter/Nathan Stark I'm gonna be honest -- I felt like the writers' choice to string out the relationship drama here diminished Allison's character somewhat. It made her seem indecisive and wishy-washy to me, which is the exact opposite of everything else that informs her character. I'd have liked to see a different response from her when she was pressured by basically the whole town to choose between Jack & Nathan -- why should she have to choose?
Douglas Fargo/Isaac Parrish I touched on this a little above: Fargo seems to really hate Parrish, but a lot of Parrish's antagonism seems like a response to that (and a lot of it stemming from how not!Fargo was a jerk of a boss before prime!Fargo replaced him after the time travel incident). Foe!yay and hatesex do not seem like they would be out of order here.
Henry Deacon & Douglas Fargo Henry's kind of my favorite, tbh. He's almost unwaveringly encouraging and supportive, but aside from the reflexive mentoring that he does, he also takes a childlike delight & joy in creativity. Like, he laughs at Fargo's fuck-ups when everyone else is cursing Fargo's name. I'd love a piece about how this affects Fargo.
Jack Carter & Henry Deacon Besties. From the moment Jack gets into town, he relies so heavily on Henry. And aside from Henry being Jack's emotional rock, he's also the only one who doesn't treat Jack like a moron for 20 hours out of every day. I really like that about Henry. A little piece about how Jack supports Henry in a time of crisis would be an awesome role reversal.
Jack Carter/Nathan Stark They hate each other SO MUCH. They secretly respect each other SO MUCH. They should just agree to fuck to get all these ~feelings~ out of their systems. Cause that would totally work, right?
Zoe Carter/Pilar Reed We don't really get to see a whole lot of Pilar, other than that she seems to be pretty steadily there for Zoe when she needs a friend. I'd love a closer look at that. I especially love how the way Pilar casually takes for granted all the weird Eureka stuff works as a foil to Zoe's insecurities & need to prove herself.
TV: Grace and Frankie
Brianna Hanson & Bud Bergstein I love how these two riff off each other -- I think they're both used to being the smartest person in the room, so they can't help but compete when they're in a room together. NGL, I also ship this a little.
Grace Hanson & Frankie Bergstein What's not to love with these two, man? I think my favorite thing in this dynamic is when Frankie insists that she damn well knows how to do something and drags Grace into it, leaving Grace to drag them back out of it once Frankie flounders. I guess it's that Grace gives in to the potential that she will appear foolish because she knows she has convivial company with Frankie along for the ride.
TV: iZombie
Clive Babineaux & Liv Moore; Clive Babineaux & Ravi Chakrabarti & Liv Moore Clive has become my favorite -- I love how his compassion and drive to help others sometimes gets in the way of his career ambitions (something that Ravi also shares to a degree). This is a good foil for the apathy we see in Liv, who struggles to desperately to feel alive and worthwhile. It really does make them a good team. And I could watch 80,000 more hours of them all role-playing at game night.
Ravi Chakrabarti/Major Lilywhite So, like, the actors who play these characters were the first people to ship these characters, and I 100% blame them for dragging me into it (OK, it's not like I went kicking and screaming). I'll never get over how it was Major's FEELINGS about being rejected by Ravi (when Ravi found out that Major was the Chaos Killer) that made him revert back to being a full zombie! The tone of canon kind of skates over how dark the premise of this show really is, and I wouldn't mind a bit of a darker take on these two. Like, maybe they have to fuck or one of them will die because SCIENCE reasons, or maybe future fic where they're the only 2 left of the main cast, or fic where Ravi has to own Major because all zombies need to be properly licensed and provide proof of their annual vaccinations, or fork-in-the-road fic where Major really is killing the Chaos victims and Ravi agrees to cover for him because LUST, etc.
TV: Murdoch Mysteries:
Okay, I have to confess that I'm only halfway through season 10, because I totally binge watched the rest, and I'm sad about the idea of not having moremoremore to watch. As of this letter, I have seen up to Excitable Chap. EDIT: I've now started S11.
George Crabtree & Henry Higgins I love how their dynamic has evolved to fiercely protective of each other, but also sick of the other's shit. Like Henry getting back at all of George's pretentious comments over the years by lording his promotion over George after his demotion. Or their competitive undercover disguises. (NEGL, I think Henry is way better at undercover work than George.)
George Crabtree & Rebecca James I adored the episode where Rebecca was off solving crime on her own because no one else believed her (frankly, I was a little disappointed by Julia's reaction), and I would love to see more of the same! George tends to step up when no one else does, and I like the way he goes beyond professionalism into a bit of actual friendliness with Rebecca.
William Murdoch/James Pendrick I can't even with these two. The heart-eyes they make at each other over the ~inventions~. The way that Murdoch keeps hurting Pendrick's feelings, and yet he keeps coming back for more, because he values Murdoch's good opinion so. The wounded puppy face Murdoch made when Pendrick came back from the World's Fair as Brackenreid's bro. Pendrick's luck with women is so abominable that he just needs to give them up altogether, ok? I mean it's not like the upstanding Murdoch would ever steal his inventions/plans/money/heart... or would he?
TV: Psych
Burton Guster/Carlton Lassiter/Juliet O'Hara/Shawn Spencer; Shawn Spencer & Juliet O'Hara & Burton Guster & Carlton Lassiter TEAM! I would honestly love any piece that shows off their dynamics, whether it's a mundane story about bowling night or what's, or whether it's a space pirates AU epic. I love how Juliet softens Carlton's rough edges, but also learns from him that it's okay to be a flat-out badass sometimes; I love that Shawn puts himself further & further out there, knowing that he has Gus to anchor him and that Gus allows Shawn to drag him along because at least it will be an adventure; I love that Shawn's pushing of boundaries makes Lassiter want to crack down harder which of course only makes Shawn push back further; I love how Juliet & Gus get each other through the way that they get Shawn and always team up to smooth over rough patches; I love that Gus & Lassiter are both huge friggin nerds and probably meet up every third Saturday for the philatelists club; I love that Juliet sometimes runs out of patience with Shawn but still doesn't want him to change, not ever.
Buzz McNab & Carlton Lassiter McNab is so fresh-faced and eager to learn from Lassiter, and Lassiter is so irascible that frankly this is a dream dynamic. What happens on the day that the chief asks McNab to ride with Lassiter for the day since O'Hara is out of town?
Carlton Lassiter/Shawn Spencer I think Shawn, especially in the early seasons, has a lot of anger, which is easy for him to take out on Lassiter, who is at a point in his life where he's already so thin-skinned about everything. All those roiling energies have to go somewhere! And then it evolves into a mutual respect and weird affection (I think the "you astound me" bit from From the Earth to Starbucks is the height of romance).
Karen Vick & Juliet O'Hara Okay, these two are super close in the new movie, like, you're my right hand man, my enforcer, my 2ic. I love it! I want like 100 different stories showing how this developed.
TV: Wynonna Earp
Jeremy Chetri/Xavier Dolls I love Jeremy's hero worship of Dolls. LOVE. But what I love even more that that is Dolls' response to it -- his smile gets brighter, his chest puffs up, his shoulders square off. Having someone see him that way really makes Dolls feel more heroic. I would love canon-compliant fic, but I think this would lend itself well to AU fic to, like, say, peasant-born Dolls slowly slogging his way up to knighthood with nerdy seventh-son Jeremy as his only real supporter, or, you know, whatever.
Rosita Bustillos/Waverly Earp So, like, what if Waverly had been half revenant? What if Rosita decided that seducing her was her ticket to a commuted death sentence?
Xavier Dolls/Wynonna Earp/Doc Holliday They just need to get over themselves and have really, really sloppy sex. Like, they've already done the fluffy, handholding, I'll support you no matter what, curtainfic bits in canon. Why not make it official???
Movie: Spy 2015
50 Cent/Nancy B. Artingstall I love the idea of 50 Cent continuing to try to romance Nancy after the events of the film, and that her oddities and awkwardness just make her more appealing to him, even as her job takes her away from him & makes her unintentionally play hard to get.
Nancy B. Artingstall & Susan Cooper & Sharon; Nancy B. Artingstall & Susan Cooper I love that the support team is so, well, supportive, compared to the competitive bickering of the field agents. I'd love to see more of Susan dragging a reluctant Nancy into more field ops. While watching the movie, I really did expect Sharon to show up in Europe, too, on Nancy's heels. Alternatively, something that takes place before the events of the film would be cute, too!
Rayna Boyanov/Susan Cooper; Susan Cooper & Rayna Boyanov Haaa, yeah, remember how I said I like foe!yay? Rayna yelling "fuck you!" and Susan responding at the end of the movie was very Princess Bride to me
("And she realized that when Rayna said, 'fuck you!' what she really meant was," I love you.'") I can imagine a White-Collar-esque scenario featuring these two fighting crime.
Susan Cooper & Rick Ford I love the idea of Rick as Susan's version of a Bond girl, constantly needing to be rescued and not that smart, but looks great in a swimsuit.
Susan Cooper/Bradley Fine/Rick Ford Yeah, there's definitely a "why should she have to choose" flavor to a lot of my prompts here, and... that continues to be valid, lol. I like the idea of both Fine & Ford trying very earnestly to make it up to Susan for having not treated her the best in the past.
