“Sorry, ladies, looks like we’re DQed,” Echo said, sweeping into the group and dropping her bowling bag with a thud.
“I do not believe I am familiar with that phrase,” Teyla replied, a frown on her face.
“She means we’ve been disqualified,” Uhura said, starting to put her boots back on. “Again.”
“Ah.” Teyla nodded. “What excuse has been given for the expulsion of our team this time?”
“Mr. High-and-Mighty himself says we need a fifth,” Echo explained. “And no ringers, either. Says we gotta bring in someone who’s already registered in at least one previous tournament.”
“Leave those boots off,” Wendy said to Uhura, who raised an eyebrow at her. “I know a guy,” Wendy continued, smiling in satisfaction. Then she frowned. “Well, a girl. Woman. Gal? Dame?”
Echo snorted. “I’m cool with whichever, as long as no one gets called a doll.”
“How soon can your friend get here?” Uhura asked.
Wendy winced. “’Friend’ might be slicing it a liiiiittle-“ She was cut off by the sound of a loud crash from deep within the bowling alley, and it wasn’t the sound of a group of pins being knocked over.
“BADA BOOM!” a voice cried joyfully, and a 25-pound ball crashed through one of the ceiling panels before hitting the floor with a loud cracking sound and rolling to a stop at Wendy’s feet.
“Yeah, she’s definitely here already,” Wendy said.
Uhura and Teyla eyed the ball with respective suspicion and curiosity.
“I need to meet this chick,” Echo said.
Uhura coughed.
“What?” Echo demanded. “It’s still better than ‘doll.’”
“If all we truly need is a fifth person to complete our team -“ Teyla began, trying to steer the conversation back to the matter at hand.
“Then we don’t really have a choice,” Uhura said.
“Wendy, would you kindly introduce us to your friend?” Teyla asked, indicating the slender figure that was rushing toward them, stooping at Wendy’s feet to lift the wayward bowling ball.
“Hey, guys,” Wendy began, and Echo coughed. Wendy glared at her, continuing, “this is-“
“Leeloo Dallas!” the woman exclaimed emphatically, automatically extending her hand toward Teyla in a friendly gesture. The bowling ball flew out of her grasp, but Teyla dodged aside neatly.
“It’s come to our attention that we are short one team member,” Uhura said smoothly. “If you’re free, we could really use the help.”
Leeloo shot a quizzical glance at Wendy.
“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Wendy assured her. “Just try to aim. For the pins.”
Leeloo turned back to Uhura and nodded. “It would be my honor to participate on your behalf.”
“Hell yeah!” Echo punched the air and slung her arm around Leeloo’s shoulders. “Let’s go get you registered, sister!”
“I like that one,” Teyla said.
“One what?” Uhura asked.
“’Sister,’” Teyla replied, and Wendy smiled back.
