First of all, I want to thank everyone for the kind, supportive comments left in response to
my last post. I really was not expecting so many comments, and I appreciate it so much. <3
Second, FINALLY FINALLY saw Cabin in the Woods tonight. Frankly, I just want to roll around in it a while. JOSS STORIES, I HAVE MISSED YOU SO!
FIRST OFF: creepy one-armed zombie girl. Is it weird that I recognized Jodelle Ferland from Dead Like Me and not SGA? I need a Dead Like Me crossover now.
Blown away by the acting of Fran Kranz & Richard Jenkins. Richard Jenkins is one of the most underrated actors IMO, especially in terms of his comedic chops. JUST HIS FACE had me busting up laughing in the speakerphone scene, even before the characters broke.
I loved how, right off the bat, even though you could see which stereotypes the five characters were supposed to be, they were immediately rich and complex. I laughed my ass off for the first time during the textbooks-as-illicit-substances dialog exchange, and continued to do so at frequent intervals during the entire movie.
The Japanese schoolgirls teaming up to defeat evil was my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE OF ALL THINGS. I want fanfic of this! I want fanfic for all the bad guys! I want a fic about dragonbat and sexy witches becoming BFF. I want fic about Sitterson & Lin's torrid affair. I want fic about how all the other attempts at sacrifice failed. I want Curt/Jules/Dana pre-canon smut. I want fic about Ronald the intern being the only one to survive the massacre! I WANT IT ALL AND I WANT IT NOW.
Like a lot of Joss things, though, the ending did leave me Unsatisfied (I think this is mostly because his worlds are so layered and complex that there can never be a neat, tidy resolution). I came across
this Tumblr post that I mostly agree with, and generally gets across how I feel.
Actually, what I was hoping would happen was that the twist at the end would be that Dana (a person willing to shoot her friend based on advice given by two people she'd never met [who had incidentally been trying to kill her]) would turn out to be the Fool, and Marty (who made out with Jules once) would be the Virgin.
I think what bothers me the most is that the movie operates on the assumption that humans have been making human sacrifices to the old gods for supposedly thousands of years, which means, well. How does anyone really know what's going to happen if the sacrifices don't get made? All the stuff said about the old gods is kind of taken at face value by Dana & Marty, and it seems like it's supposed to be taken at face value by the audience. But. I don't really trust the judgement or perceptions or intentions of people whose careers are based around killing people in the most horrifying and gruesome ways possible.
Also: after only 2 weeks in theaters, the local AMC 30 (30!) has already shunted Cabin in the Woods off to the smallest theater in the building, and it was pretty much full up. We got there about 10 mins before the movie (i.e. - the trailers) was supposed to start, and had to ask people to move over so we could have 3 seats together. And a ton of people came in after us. Even the front rows were almost filled.
