Gambit's power is to put an explosive charge into objects (not living things) he's touching, then shortly afterwards the object blows up. The more mass an object has, the longer it takes and the bigger the explosion, so charging something small and light like a playing card is quick, non-lethal and also he is a big show-off and thinks it looks cool. /NERD

But my understanding of X-Men is limited to X1-3, 60's Groovy X-Men, and what I remember of X-Men Evolution, which was severely not canon anyway.
