Chuck. Sigh. It seems like they've dumbed it down even more, if that's possible. I think they are trying to make it even more mainstream. This show is so frustrating. I'd really like to be able to totally enjoy it, except they keep putting icky bits in

Basically, it's on multiple levels. The show is written expressly for Castle; the female characters don't have storylines that develop out of who they are (example: in last night's episode, Alexis had a boyfriend... but the only reason the writers put that in was to draw parallels between her relationship & Castle's relationship with Beckett.), but how they service Castle's storylines instead.
And because the show revolves entirely around Castle, the Castle/Beckett relationship is creepily written as if, because Castle and Beckett are interested in each other, Beckett is for Castle. Like, as if she has some sort of obligation to be with him.
Then there's the fact that Castle doesn't respect Beckett professionally, doesn't listen when she gives him an order, breaks the law multiple times by going to crime scenes he shouldn't, and is rude when he's been arrested for murder. And the ongoing thing with the show is that Beckett is apparently incapable of solving a case herself. Which can't possibly be true if she's head detective of the homicide division, but that's all we're ever shown. Castle breaks every single case, and apparently Beckett even feels the need to pander to that.
Finally, and this has a bit to do with the above part about the conceit that Beckett is for Castle -- he is completely inappropriately sexual toward her, and she encourages it by dropping sexual comments (example: in last night's episode 'you should see some of the clubs I've been to') solely for his titillation. There is even a bit of this in regard to other female and male characters -- Castle has gawked at Lanie, at the performers in the burlesque club; Esposito & Ryan drooled over the dominatrices last season, etc, etc. The women in this series aren't sexy because they think they are sexy; they are only sexy if they are validated by men thinking they're sexy, and that's not right.
