Summary: Eliot, Sophie knows, is very protective of the rest of the team.

Eliot, Sophie knows, is very protective of the rest of the team. Almost too protective, sometimes. Like when one of them is in trouble.

Like now, when a friend of their current mark has backed Parker, playing a waitress again, into a corner. Sophie can hear Nathan and Alec over her ear-piece shouting for Parker not to react - the last thing they need is another fork-stabbing incident. Parker’s looking more and more trapped, though, her eyes wide and even from across the room, Sophie can see the younger woman fighting her flight-or-fight instincts.

But she’s trapped in conversation with their mark, and Sophie knows if she breaks off this conversation, they’re liable to lose him. Even so, she’s about to do exactly that when she notices Eliot out of the corner of her eye. He’s dressed up - Sophie’s ‘date’ for the evening and he’s been charming and agreeable throughout. Now, though, he’s pushing through the groups of partygoers, his blue eyes narrowed and an extremely pissed-off look on his face.

It’s strange; for a moment Sophie thought she had seen those blue eyes glinting with gold.

The man in the corner has one hand wrapped around Parker’s wrist, and Sophie hears the pained almost-whimper echoing in her ears, but Nathan’s yelling for her to stand down, and Eliot’s there, forcing his way between the man and Parker, staring up at him with complete disgust.

“Eliot, get rid of him now,” Nathan hisses over the comms, and Eliot bares his teeth in something that looks nothing like a smile.

“Best you let the lady go,” Eliot says, and Sophie hears him loud and clear in her ear.

"What’s it to you?” The other man says. He’s taller and bigger than Eliot is and he’s obviously trying to use that to intimidate. Sophie allows herself a little smirk at that as she’s pretending to pay attention to their mark. In reality, she’s keeping an eye on the three in the corner and thanking god that they haven’t seemed to have attracted anyone else’s attention.

Eliot’s got one hand on the bigger man’s shoulder and Sophie wonders how hard he’s squeezing; judging by the sudden way the other man straightens, it must be very hard indeed.

“Let her go now, boy,” Eliot says, and his voice is low, the growling in Sophie’s ear making her shiver even though she’s clear across the room. She’s so intent on watching Eliot and paying attention to the orders over the ear-piece and keeping up her side of the conversation with the mark that she almost thinks she sees Parker flicker, like she’s suddenly out of focus for a split second. It must be a trick of the light, though, because that is completely impossible.

Suddenly she hears Nathan sigh in frustration, and Sophie glances across to the corner again. Eliot’s hand is still in full view on the shoulder, but his other hand is down between himself and the other man, and Sophie only realises what he’s doing when the larger man curses and hunches over slightly.

“Let her go,” Eliot repeats, his voice promising danger and pain and Sophie’s reminded of the time she saw a documentary on wolves. They were fighting, teeth bared and feral growls echoing through the speakers of her television, and Sophie is struck by the similarity between those wolves and Eliot right at this very second.

The man lets go, finally, and backs away, throwing dark glances over his shoulder as he moves on to find other, less-protected prey. Eliot ignores him - once he’s stopped touching Parker, it’s like the other man has completely disappeared off Eliot’s radar.

“Get her out of here,” Nathan orders, but Sophie can already hear the relief in his voice.

“You’re the boss,” Eliot mutters back, his voice already calmer as he ushers Parker out of the room, examining her wrist as they go.

They’re out of sight, then, but Sophie can hear the sob Parker lets out, and she can hear the low growl of Eliot calming her and - much later - Parker even manages a smile when they all meet up back at the hotel suite. Sophie notices, though, the quiet conversation Nathan and Eliot have in the corner, one of Nathan’s hands on Eliot’s shoulder looking in no way like the hold Eliot had had on the other man at the party while Alec shows off some computer trick to distract Parker. For the next few days, Parker is never alone, Eliot’s blue eyes following her everywhere even when he’s not hovering over her and looking for the all world like an over-protective she-wolf with her cub.
