Title: Seeing Things Differently
Author: Katty, aka
merry_gentryFandom: SGA
Pairing: John/Rodney, slight Jack/Daniel and Lorne/Parrish if you want to see them
Rating: PG/PG-13
Disclaimer: Unfortunately, they do not belong to me. They do conjure up rather pretty images in one's mind, though, don't they? ^_^
Author's Notes: Written for
sherriaisling, who requested 'Stargate Atlantis. John/Rodney, as seen through somebody else's eyes.' - I'm sorry it took so long. Please forgive me? I couldn't decide on one character, so I chose 10 - and did one drabble for each. NEVER AGAIN!!! -_- I offically hate cutting my words down to 100 - I seemed to always end up with one or two extra that I then had to cut!
Slight spoilers for Rising, Hide and Seek, The Storm/Eye, The Siege Pt3, Runner, Duet, Trinity, The Return Pt2 and Doppleganger.
Daniel Jackson, Episode 1.1 Rising Pt1
Despite the fact that Daniel knows that many people see him as an absentminded professor type, Doctor Jackson is actually very good at reading people.
He sees in Rodney’s face, buried deep beneath the jealousy and the scientific interest. It’s an echo of what he imagines lurked in his face, eyes and mind when Jack came back to Abydos to fetch him back.
Later, after they’ve seen the Atlantis mission through the ‘gate, Daniel mentions his theory to Jack, who just laughs.
“Rodney McKay and Sheppard? Never gonna happen, Danny-boy.”
“We’ll see,” Daniel says calmly, sitting back on their couch.
Elizabeth Weir, Episode 1.3 Hide and Seek
It’s during their first week on Atlantis when everything’s still so exciting and new, and she has already fallen in love with the city, that Elizabeth begins to notice. The personal shield device just seems like another wonderful item left by the Ancients. She adores the look of childish glee on Rodney and Major Sheppard’s faces - even though it does make her feel like a Kindergarten teacher.
Then it all goes horribly wrong.
The look of utter panic that she sees on the Major’s face as he stands at the top of the Gateroom steps is one she’ll never forget.
Radek Zelenka, Early to Mid Season 1
It’s like having his own television permanently tuned to a comedy when Rodney and the Major are around each other, though most of the rest of the lab usually find someplace else to be.
Rodney is like small child, always looking for something to keep Sheppard’s attention on himself. Sheppard is also like small child, always ready to be distracted by whatever new toy Rodney has found for him to play with.
When Sheppard starts resting his hand on Rodney’s shoulder a little long, or Rodney beams a little too brightly, Radek just smiles and goes back to his work.
Teyla Emmagan, Post Episodes 1.9 The Storm and 1.10 The Eye
When Teyla first met Doctor Rodney McKay, she treated him with the respect and thanks her people owed the new inhabitants of the City of the Ancestors. He seemed nice enough, though.
After the Genii have tried and failed to take the city, Teyla is given charge of Sora, who she deposits in the brig with more than enough blankets.
Back in the control room, she comes across Doctor McKay and Major Sheppard sitting at the chevron console. Her eyes widen when she sees the depth of the wound on his arm that Major Sheppard is dressing so very carefully.
Carson Beckett, Episode 2.1 The Siege Pt 3
When Carson actually sits down and thinks about it, it does seem ridiculously obvious. The sheer desolation of Rodney’s face as they stand together and watch the dot that represents the puddle jumper disappear…Carson thought it was because one of the two of them would have to fly the second ‘jumper. God knows he was scared enough.
The blare of the self-destruct was sounding through the Gateroom, but all of Rodney’s attention was fixed on the screen. When Major Sheppard’s voice sounded over the system, Rodney seemed to simply come back to life and Carson gets it; finally, he understands.
Evan Lorne, Post Episode 2.3 Runner
He has said as much to McKay, but Evan Lorne really doesn’t understand how Colonel Sheppard puts up with McKay. Over time, he’s seen McKay save Atlantis or teams in the field repeatedly, but that doesn’t explain why the Colonel voluntarily goes out of his way to spend his downtime with McKay.
Then McKay drags the Colonel out of the mess after they’ve finished dinner, and Lorne catches the eye of David sitting across from him as he explains something to do with some obscure relative of a native to south Asia plant that he’s found, and Evan thinks ‘oh’.
Laura Cadman, Post Episode 2.4 Duet
Laura Cadman doesn’t subscribe to all that macho ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ bullshit - she has enough to put up with simply by being a woman in the Marines without bothering about some archaic outing system.
Since being in Rodney’s mind, though, things have become a little more noticeable, not least of which are Rodney’s feelings for her male C.O.
She’d tease him about it, because teasing Rodney is just fun, but she can’t quite forget the way Colonel Sheppard makes Rodney’s breath catch when he speaks or the way he is, quite simply, the most important person in Rodney’s life.
Ronon Dex, Post Episode 2.6 Trinity
After they bring the flaxi back from Belka, Teyla still acts like she’s mad at him. Ronon knows when women get like this, it’s best to stay out of the way - Satedan women were vengeful.
Because Sheppard spends his mealtimes with Teyla, Ronon has to choose to find somewhere else to sit for the time being. He chooses McKay because the scientist doesn’t force useless conversation.
He’s heard of Doranda, and he sees the way even McKay’s people avoid him. Catching McKay staring over at Sheppard, Ronon breaks the silence.
“He’ll get over it,” but McKay doesn’t look any happier.
Jack O’Neill, Episode 3.11 The Return Pt2
Jack is, admittedly, rather shocked when Elizabeth Weir reels off the list of personnel with her. Probably less shocked when he’s told that the mission is unsanctioned. Sheppard is too much like himself, too much of a maverick, to let Atlantis be taken away from them like this.
When McKay is explaining their plan and ‘attempting’ to get the cell unlocked, Jack has to scowl to stop himself laughing. When Sheppard starts lecturing McKay, Jack loses the scowl. There’s something so achingly familiar about the way they play off of each other, and Jack thinks he owes Daniel an apology.
Sam Carter, Episode 4.4 Doppleganger
Sam Carter has known Rodney McKay on and off for years and he’s kind of become the bane of her existence. Or, he was - since she’s been in Atlantis, she’s seen a different side to McKay. He’s slightly calmer now, although that pent up energy still manifests itself as biting sarcasm.
Still, he doesn’t really seem any more willing to take risks, although she has read the mission reports of her teams.
When McKay takes one look at Colonel Sheppard and immediately orders Doctor Keller to hook him back up to the fungus, Sam remembers there’s different kinds of bravery.
