I just got back from a trip to NYC to visit my friend Brooke whom I met at CTY this summer about an hour ago. I SHOULD have been home last night, but I'll get into that story later. It was a really nice trip, and it was good to spend the afternoon and evening with a very cool person. :)
On our way to find a place to eat in the city, we passed a homeless guy with a rather interesting sign. See the subject of this post. :) After eating, we sat in Union Square and talked for a while, and then wandered the city a bit more.
Upon returning to Penn Station so that both of us could head home, we noticed a lot of police activity and unusual amounts of people entering the station, our first sign that all was not right. When we got to the entrance to the Amtrak + NJTransit concourse, we found that the entire area was closed off due to a fire. The LIRR section of the station had just reopened, explaining the unusual influx of people into Penn. Thus, she could get home but I couldn't. In the end I wound up spending the night at her place on Long Island, hoping things would be fixed by the next morning.
Fortunately, they were. I got into Penn off of the LIRR, and saw that everything was normal. After a brief detour to B&H Photo/Video to check out their retail store a block from the station, I hopped an NJT train to Newark, where I ate lunch before hopping a Raritan Valley Line train back home. I hate riding the train home, because it means returning to my wonderful isolation ward after (usually) having a good time. The last time I rode that train home was from the Columbia vs. Cornell football game and postgame parade, which was an absolutely wonderful trip into the city that kept my mind off of some very unpleasant things going on in my life around that weekend.
I definately plan on going into NYC more often this semester. I've got plenty of time, and while NYC is kind of expensive, with current gas prices it's way cheaper than most other options. :(
Unfortunately the rest of the weekend is likely to be rather blah.
