It's the last day of the childhood event for Mssr Pendergast, so of course I have to have his seven-year-old self all up in the dance. He's in a teensy little tux, and his wide blue eyes are staring at everything. He's a little shy, this young, and he wanders over to get some punch and then hides near the tables, nursing his drink and looking around uneasily.

"Hey doc, does that little brat look familiar to you?"

Philip turns his head to see what Clarence already spotted in the corner of his eye. Something does ring a bell there, but for once Philip is not in the mood for an investigation and he certainly isn't in the mood to talk to a child while suffering from 'hit on everything that has a pulse and some things that probably don't'-itis.

He looks away, turns his attention to other matters and is left with the occasional muttering of Clarence as he tries to figure out why that child leaves him with inexplicable feelings of rage.

Pendergast notices being slightly stared at for half a moment, but he ignores it in kind, watching the rest of the party with wide eyes.

Pendergast is seven years old, and his tux still fits better than Bill's does. Where is the justice? Bill, however, is not comparing tuxes, being too busy trying not to trip over the little blond boy, and keep his eggnog from spilling as well.

"Whoa! Hey. Excuse me, sorry."

He glares up at the lanky (and still cow-licked) journalist. "Excuse me, indeed," he snaps back authoritatively, pursing his lips.

If he'd gotten that from an adult, Bill would be irritated right back, and undoubtedly ready with some biting (if potentially odd) remark. But he can't exactly unleash his razor with on a little boy.

"Don't be that way. It was an honest mistake."

"An honest mistake? Do you routinely go around tripping over people, then, hm?" Too bad he can't remember you, or there'd be a "Mister Smithback" right after that. "What is your name?"

"No, not at all, it was just a momentary lapse of attention, I--"

Why is he explaining himself to a tiny child? Even if that child does happen to be absurdly self-possessed and inexplicably makes him a little nervous.

"I'm William Smithback, Jr." he says, feeling slightly absurd.

"Well, Mister Smithback, perhaps you should spend more time paying attention to your surroundings," he snaps back, and purses his lips and turns away. If you listened particularly closely, you might even hear a "hmph"!

[Bill just got a crumb down the wrong pipe. He definitely isn't laughing as he walks away. Definitely.]

What is such a little boy doing at a formal dance? Clearly this merits investigation--especially if the mansion's going to pull something funny.

"Hello there."

He glances up at Meltzer and cocks his head slightly, raising an eyebrow. "Hello."

"Aloysius Pendergast," he replies with the certainty that comes with being from a well-known family.

Oh the poor child.

He offers a hand to shake.

"Mark Meltzer. Good to meet you."

He shakes it, and gives a little smile. "I think you're the first one I've met around here with any manners," he says, slightly shy. "It's nice to meet you, as well."
