the Story:
Running around Wonderland for several hours of the morning really wears a guy out. Which was why as soon as Ryohei found Hibari sitting outside on the checkerboard hills, he joined him and promptly went to sleep in the grass. A short nap would help his body recover from the exercise and let him hang out with Hibari without bugging him. Win-win.
Hibari had only looked up from his book momentarily before going back to it. There was no reason to alter his behavior with a Ryohei sleeping nearby. Just meant things would be quieter longer. In Ryohei's presence that was always rare and valuable
Ryohei only slept for an hour or so, and when he woke it was all at once. He stretched and sat up, rubbing one eye with the heel of his hand.
"Still reading?"
"Yes. But I doubt that's going to continue from here now that you're awake."
Ryohei smiled at that and leaned closer to Hibari. "What're you reading about?"
Hibari scowled slightly. "You wouldn't have heard of it."
"Just because I'm forgetful doesn't mean I'm stupid."
Hibari made a face. "It's a book on Japanese history."
"Which part?"
"The latter part"
"That's extremely unspecific." Ryohei rested his elbows on his knees and his chin on his hands. "How come you always come out here to read?"
"It's quiet and I like the feel of the sun."
For some reason that comment made Ryohei smile. "Me too. Except I guess it's not quiet with me here."
"Not as quiet as it would be otherwise."
"I'm going to stay until you tell me to go away." He blinked a little in surprise. He hadn't meant to say that--or at least not to say it that way.
Hibari looked at him from the corner of his eye. "Is this fun for you?"
"Spending time with you is fun to the extreme."
"You have odd hobbies."
"How is hanging out with you an odd hobby?"
Hibari shrugged and went back to his book. "I'm ignoring you in favor of paper. That you're entertained is ridiculous."
Hibari stopped for a second. Wait...what?
"You're not ignoring me, you're just acting like the book is more important than talking to me." Ryohei made a face, but still added, "Besides, I'm not entertained. I just want your attention."
"Then I shouldn't give it to you." Hibari slammed his book closed. "What the hell is going on?"
Frowning, Ryohei shook his head. "I don't know to the extreme. I didn't mean to say that."
Hibari scowled. "Event."
That was the only thing that made sense. "Yeah."
"I'm going to go to my room before I say something that will embarass me." He stood up, already feeling his face grow warm at the way his mouth rambled off things uninhibited.
Ryohei caught Hibari's arm, keeping him from walking away. "You don't have to be embarrassed in front of me. I love you, so I don't think badly of you."
Immediately after speaking, he clenched his teeth, but his expression remained earnest.
Hibari's head snapped in his direction, eyeing his face then the hand on his arm. "You don't love me. There's no reason to love me. I've made sure of that."
"I still do." He didn't let go of Hibari, though he did stand up. If Hibari was going to punch him, he'd prefer to be standing. "I tried not to, but I can't help it to the extreme."
Hibari scowled, trying to pull his arm away. "You need to help it. I don't love you."
"I know. You love Seimei." Knowing Hibari would just walk away if he let go, Ryohei held on.
Hibari's face flushed. "You shouldn't say things like that out loud. It makes it true."
Scowling, Ryohei moved closer, getting in Hibari's face. "It's true even if you don't say it! I should know. I want more than anything for it not to be true."
"I'm not talking to you about this until I can lie and avoid saying things that I would rather keep to myself. Just get over it and be happy I'm gracious enough not to hold it against you."
"If you're just going to lie, then what's the point of talking about it?!" Ryohei scowled at him. "I'm your friend, not your pet, so you need to act like it."
"I don't have friends; I have people who are useful to me. Except that's bullshit and I know full well that we're friends but that won't exist back home so it doesn't really count."
"You are my friend back home, you extreme asshole!"
Hibari scowled. "Not to the extent we are here. I have Kusakabe and you have a sport."
"But it's still true. And it doesn't matter if we'll forget this when we leave if we have to deal with it now."
"I don't have to deal with it. I can ignore it or I can bite it to death and those are the only options I care to explore."
"Why?" There was nothing plaintive about Ryohei's tone or expression. He wasn't asking for favors here, he just wanted the truth. And he was willing to use the situation to his advantage to get it. "What is it that makes him better than me? I know you thought about it before. So what changed?"
Hibari clenched his teeth together. No no no, he was not going to answer any of that. He tried again to pull away from Ryohei, looking away from him and walking, dragging him if he refused to let him go
Unfortunately for Hibari, Ryohei's physical strength was greater than that of most of the people he dealt with on a regular basis, and if Ryohei didn't want to be moved, he wouldn't be.
"Tell me."
Hibari turned and threw a punch at his face.
Punching being one of Ryohei's strong points, it took no effort to catch Hibari's fist before it hit. If it had been a tonfa, that would have been another matter.
Hibari hadn't intended to throw a punch but his body, much like his mouth, seemed to be unable to filter. Still, having his punch stopped was irritating.
"I don't know why I like him. It pisses me off to try and think about it and when I do think about it I end up just thinking about sex instead or food or sitting around doing nothing and if you don't let me walk away from this conversation right now I'm going to end up telling you it was different before because I knew I'd be perfectly okay fucking and fighting with you but beyond that I have low expectations in any relationship and I am going to bite you to death for this."
Ryohei was quiet for a minute, taking that in. He can't help the sad look that creeps into his eyes, but it wasn't heartbroken or depressed. More, it was a melancholy sort of resignation at hearing something he'd already suspected said out loud.
"So there's no chance, then."
He let go of both of Hibari's arms.
Hibari took several steps away from him. "No. No chance. I'm selfish and spoiled and I don't care to change even though I know I put the people who care about me through hell because of it.You deserve better than what I would be willing to give you and I resent you enough as it is for making me feel as indebted to you as I do at times."
If anything, the melancholy just got deeper at that. "There's no reason to feel indebted for things I want to do for you. You're my best friend and so I'd do anything for you happily. But I guess even that's different for you."
"You know it is so why bother asking." Hibari crossed his arms over his face. The Mansion had indeed found a more torturous event than any other thus far.
"Because I'm not the kind of person who sees things unless they're put in front of me. If you don't tell me things, I can't know them."
For the first time he could remember, the thing Ryohei most wanted to do was run away. Not from the conversation or from Hibari, necessarily, but from what both of those were eliciting. Running away from things wasn't even in his repertoire of possible responses. Despite this, he clenched his fists and took a step back.
"I extremely don't want to feel like this anymore."
"I know what you mean. But it isn't easy and all you can do it hate yourself for being too stupid to just make it happen." Hibari shook his head and dropped his arms, his hair hiding his face in their place. "I'm going inside and if I ever see you again it will be too soon."
"Don't say that. It feels like dying when you say things like that."
"You should have thought of that before you pressed the issue."
"I couldn't not do it."
Hibari shook his head. "I'll consider that and eventually decide to blame the event and not you but still begrudge you for the extent of information you got out of it."
Ryohei couldn't help smiling a little, though it wasn't an entirely happy expression. "And you already know I'll just pretend not to notice how much you resent me and act like I just forgot the whole thing."
"I am alright with that. I even prefer that."
"I wish you didn't."
"You also wish I loved you back so we already know you're not that bright."
Hibari bit his lip. "...I'm sorry about this."
That surprised Ryohei even more than his own compulsion to flee. He stared at Hibari for a second. "...Me too. I wanted you to answer me, but I don't like making you unhappy."
Hibari nodded and started to walk away. Time to lock himself away in his room until this is over.
Ryohei let him go. Going after him now would just make things worse.
