Today is my country's National Day woohoo!
Now, I'm not really a patriot , I can ,in fact, be heard saying shit about the government and about how we generally handle our country and some of our mentality on any given day BUT there's always something I knew about us and it will never change no matter how much we suck and how many mistakes we make : we have potential.
So, 1st of December is our National Day because it is the day when all romanians came together under one country. Before that we were divided into sections. In older times romanians were split into 3 independent regions called Tara Romaneasca(which is now the South/South East of Romania),Transylvania(Mid/Vest/North West) and Moldavia (North East + what is now Republic of Moldavia and some parts that are now in Ukraine). The first real attempt to unite them was made by one of the greatest leaders we had ,who first rulled over Tara Romaneasca .Mihai Viteazu(translates as Mihai the Brave)tried to unify the 3 regions in a campain that ended not very successfuly but managed a unification in 1600.
Anyway, on the 1st of December 1918,in a town called Alba Iulia(in Transylvania - which we also call Ardeal btw) Romania was born. During WW1 we were at first neutral then entered the war with the Entente(Allied Powers) and then were finally "allowed" to merge also because technically 90% of the land was owned by romanian ethnics.
We were a Monarchy for a while, between the wars, but from 1938 to 1944 there was a dictatorship first of King Carol II and his camarilla and then with the military dictator Antonescu.
During WW2 we first tried to stay neutral but in June 1940 the Soviets started threatening us so the army had to leave some land (Basarabia in particular)and this along with other stuff had us enter the war with the Axis (Nazi Germany,Japan,Italy, etc)under the command of the Wermacht in 1941. We actually became quite an important source of resources for Germany(for ex we were the greatest source of oil) at that time btw which was bad for us cause we were awarded with some bombing raids by the Allies but at least we managed to get some land back from the Russians. Antonescu was a Nazi fan (he was nuts so it was obvious) so stuff happened to the jews here as well . But in 1944 Antonescu was arrested by King Mihai(Michael) and we switched sides, turned against the Axis but our role in helping defeat Nazi Germany was not recognized at the Paris Peace Conference in 1947(we always get fucked in the ass),Soviet troups were joyfully camped on our territory and didn't leave,Communists claimed 80% of the vote and good times were upon us but at least we got Northern Transylvania back(lost land from Moldova but whatever).
The good times of the communist period lasted until 1989.
From then on we are a democracy rulled by idiots and more idiots and bigger idiots but we're freeeeeee.
If you're wondering , our country has about 22 million people, we speak romanian(which is a very latin language), our ancestors were a people called Daci who were finally conquered by the romans and we became an important roman province and were romanized, we were invaded by basically everyone due to our prime position in the region(right where east meets west),etc, etc, etc
