Scotty was in a significantly better mood when he headed back down to Engineering a few hours later. He did the rounds, but as he'd expected, the rest of the engineers on duty had managed just fine during his brief absence. In fact none of them seemed to have noticed that he'd been gone. He would have been alerted if there was an emergency anyway.
The transporter schematics were still on the holoscreen in his makeshift little office. He saved the file and closed it, bringing up instead the mess of diagrams and calculations he'd spawned in trying to hammer the transwarp beaming theory into publishable shape. Now that the brick wall he'd hit was gone, it had become an exciting and organic process again.
Rambling aloud about five-dimensional transspatial velocity vectors, he set cheerfully to work.
