Kirk was on the bridge yet again, looking tense. When he hadn't gotten a reply the first time, he had started using the communications to attempt to send hailing frequencies towards the planet.
It was now a day since the first away team had left, and Kirk had yet to be able to hear back from any of them. Kirk took a deep breath, wishing for a brief moment that he hadn't wished for something exciting. It was one thing to be stranded on a planet with no way of communication, and another to be the one attempting to communicate.
He still tried, in vain.
"Spock. Spock. Come in, Spock. Enterprise to Spock. Kirk to Spock. Can you hear me!?"
Again, no response. The same for the other crew members, the first that had been sent over. Sky hadn't answered, and neither had Bones. A sinking feeling had begun to crawl in his stomach.
For what was supposed to be a purely scientific mission, there should have been no interference in their communications equipment, nor should they have taken this long. Kirk took a slow, deep, long breath, attempting to apply logic and strategy to the situation. He flipped his communications channel open to the Intelligence office aboard the ship. "Commander Lewis. I require all known information about Bacchus II. Please have it ready for me as soon as possible. Kirk out."
He maintained his composure, but anyone who knew Kirk well knew that he was deep in thought, deep in his element. He was thinking miles ahead, and he needed to act, and fast.
"We need a second away team," he said, softly, his voice low as he thought things through. "They should have been able to return by now."
He needed people. Someone with fighting experience -- he could go down, and Sulu. Sulu could go down. Kirk took another deep breath. Uhura could man the conn. He needed someone from medical -- Chapel.
And -- security, he could use Lt. Brown and Ensign McCavell. As far as the science department went, he was limited -- with so many of the department gone on the first away mission, he found himself without a decent science officer. Chekov. Chekov had a wealth of information -- and Kirk knew he could count on him in order to locate the stranded officers. Kirk sent communications to all officers asking for those he needed to meet him in the Officer's Lounge at 1600, taking the half hour he had to seek out assistance and to gain more information.
