MISSION POST: Conference Room - Day 44 - Private...ish?

Jun 29, 2010 22:45

It was with a distinct air of purpose that Creed made her way to the conference room for the preliminary briefing. It had been too long in between missions, the lull drawing on long enough that people were starting to get bored. A new assignment was exactly what they needed ( Read more... )

Leonard showed up not long after. A little winded from -- yep, you guessed it -- taking the chutes up to Deck One. But not nearly as badly as before. One thing you could say for this damn thing with the turbolift, he was getting a great cardio workout.

Looking around the conference room, he saw it was just him and Creed right now. Thank god, someone he was still talking to. The list seemed to be growing just as fast as the number of turbotraps. Top of the list being Jim and Spock, ironically. Well, whatever. He was too busy being the Master of Stairmasters, when not passing the time away like a sardine. They could look him up -- or pull him outta the damn lift -- once they got their heads outta their asses.

Leonard sat down next to Creed as he nodded to her in greeting. "Commander. How's things in Security?"

David's green head peeked into the conference room, still a few minutes early. He saw McCoy and Lynn and leaned out checking the room and comparing it to the message he'd received on his PADD (the official one, not the smaller ones he kept in his pockets). He leaned back in and waited for a pause in their conversation.

"Is this the-uh-the right room for the mission?" David asked, pointing to his PADD at the message he'd gotten.

It wasn't like it was easy to miss all that green when it popped into the room. Then popped back out, and came back a few seconds later. Still, Leonard had chosen to ignore the odd game of Hokey Pokey until Tinny finally spoke up. It wouldn't be accurate to say they'd mended all fences together. Leonard still had a few issues with the man. But some good had come out of their time trapped in the lift together. He could put aside most concerns for the sake of professionalism, at least.

"Yeah, this is the conference room," he answered after a pause. Wondered what kind of room the man was expecting them to have a department meeting in. Sure the hell not another lift, thank god. "C'mon on in and plunk yourself down. We don't have much of assigned seatin'. 'Cept for the Captain's chair, of course. Spock usually hordes the chair with the computer." They played interpreter for each other, probably.

"Well, thank you doctor," Creed replied. She set her padd down on the table and smiled politely at him. Well, something approaching politely. She was still more than a little irritated at having been left out of the loop about the faked chemical crisis. But there was a time and a place to air frustrations, and a mission briefing was definitely neither.

She directed a rather warmer smile at David when he appeared in the doorway. "Yes, take a seat. The meeting should be starting soon."

David was aware of the uncomfortableness of the doctor and his acquaintanceship but was relieved to see that the doctor was making strides to overcome the discomfort. David didn't let his anxiety show as he grinned. It wasn't exactly a situation that could be easily overcome. Though confrontation couldn't hurt eventually.

He raised a brow at Creed's tone and his grin turned to an amused smirk. His face always betrayed him, he found. He nodded at Lynn's greeting.

"Thank you, Lynn," David said. He sat down next to McCoy. Just because something made him uncomfortable didn't mean he wanted to avoid it. In fact, in tended that he was drawn to situations that inspired a certain amount of discomfort.

"How did your patient end up doing, doctor?" David asked softly, genuinely. He wasn't sure if it was an appropriate question, but McCoy would inform him if it wasn't. Of this he was sure.

Leonard caught the change of attitude with Creed when Tinny came in. Kept up a friendly demeanor, but looked down into his med bag -- packed full of just about everything he could think of, ready for the next installment of Trap-a-Doc -- with a raised brow. Well, someone was sure popular with the gals in red. Too bad they clashed so badly with green. But if the Orion played his cards right ( ... )

It was unfortunate that the doctor had pegged David in such a way that skewed David as a head doctor looking for a crazy person to fix instead of a potential friend making sure the other was doing alright. But this wasn't the first time that David had dealt with the stereotype.

"I'm glad to hear that," David said, keeping things short. Perhaps he was projecting his own paranoia, not wanting to seem as if he were prying into the doctor's life. So he didn't ask anymore questions. "I missed one appointment, but was able to reschedule. The other was very understanding of my lateness. I wish I'd been able to send a communication, though." David gave a smile.

He then leaned over to get a better look at the head of security. "I've been meaning to ask you when the next scheduled self-defense training is. I haven't been getting any messages about it on ship-wide."

He took his attention off of the doctor completely, hoping it would make him feel a little more relaxed.

"There next one is scheduled for- the day after tomorrow, I think." Lynn checked her padd. "Yes, that's right. We'll be in the main gym. Feel free to come by."

She glanced down at her watch and frowned. "How many are we still waiting on?"

Being that they were both health professionals, Leonard could understand how important an appointment could be to a patient. Hell, you didn't have to be bleeding or bodily hurting to really need a consultation. His own family had taught him that. So for the span of the brief conversation, Leonard stopped fussing with his bag, and his paranoia, and listened like a doctor. Nodded, then added quietly but honestly, "Glad things worked out in the end."

He then withdrew, both physically and mentally, from conversation again. Where the hell was that microtape with the initial medical assessment report for this mission?

By the time he found what he'd been looking for, conversation between the other two had stumbled to a halt. Well, it was kinda hard to flirt during a work meeting. Though there was that one time, back in med school with that sassy little Andorian. Never did find out which gender that was, but it'd been fun... Anyway, Tinny didn't say anything, so Leonard figured it was safe to insert himself again. Persona non- ( ... )

"Lt. Uhura's not aboard right now," Creed said with a shrug. "The Fleet's borrowed her for an unrelated mission. No-one seems to know any details." Which was another sore point. As Head of Security she was generally opposed to members of the crew being shanghaied with no explanation. Even if it was by their own people.

"Borrowed her? They do that?" he frowned and looked at Tinny as if the man could psychoanalyze Starfleet Command. Useful skill, if it were possible, but the man would probably be his own patient afterwards. "No offense to our other communications officers, but what the hell happens if we need her? That li'l lady's got some serious skills," and attitude. And if she's gone... that means Jim's an even bigger pain the ass than he's been lately.

Oh joy, Leonard may get to play stand in for the Obsessed Straight Boy. Maybe he can get trapped in another lift for a while before then.

It was at this point that Scotty showed up, on time for once. "Mornin'," he said, sitting down on the other side of Leonard from Tinny. "Commander. Doc...s." He set his padd down on the table and relaxed back into the chair. Hmm. Was it just him or was there a certain tension in the air?

When McCoy looked at him he offered only a shrug in response. He rubbed the back of his head. He'd put his elbows on his knees in a casual gesture and an attempt to not look intimidating. The posture afforded him the ability to look up when people talked instead of them having to look up at him. He was a bit out of his conversational depths when it came to how things ran around the ship but was listening so that he could learn.

"That does seem a little brash. And weird that they didn't share anymore information. Sort of like a spy, huh? Double-0 seven? Secret agent man... No? Never mind. Probably don't even have spies in Starfleet," David said and scratched his head again.

He perked up when he saw Scotty enter. "Mr. Scott. Good to see you again," he said with the same kindness he'd shown to both McCoy and Creed. He gave a little wave. So, yes, it was painfully obvious that David was absolutely not a trained officer in the least.

He had to smirk some at Tinny's attempt at harmlessness. Being a big man himself, Leonard knew all the tricks a fast-growing kid employed to fit in. The humor was kinda disarming too, admittedly.

Course, nothing gotta smile outta Leonard like the sunny personality that just bounced in.

"Hey Scotty," he managed to temper some of his enthusiasm as the man sat down. Didn't do to be all that obvious... though he suspected more of his smile got away from him than he'd thought. "You're just a bit early. How many offerings didja make to the Engineerin' gods ta accomplish that?"

"Aye, likewise mate." Scotty nodded at Tinny. It'd been a while since he'd last seen their ship's psychiatrist around. Mind you, he assumed the man'd been busy. The resident shrink on this floating asylum had to have his work cut out. "How's it goin'?"

He slouched down a little more in his chair and grinned at Leonard. "A'right, doc? Same as always; booze an' dirty vids. Don't tell th'Captain. Think some'a it was his."

"It's been going alright," David said, sliding his chair out a little so he could get a better view.

And don't think David didn't see the immediate change in attitude by McCoy to Scott's arrival. David wasn't big on assumption, though. But the exchange had been noted. It was actually nice to see the CMO this relaxed.

"Ticking boxes in forms most of the time. I think I fill out more forms than I see patients, quite honestly," David said and eased up on the conversation. He let the two friends have the floor with a grin to Scott's comment.
