It really was shaping up to be one of those days. Jessica Keller had come on shift expecting a nice quiet one, spent doing nice, boring maintenance work, safe in the knowledge that anything that went hideously wrong was the Chief's problem.

So much for that.

The announcement echoed around engineering just like the rest of the ship, and Jess pressed a hand against her face. How had she ended up in charge of this mess? The Chief wasn't supposed to get taken out of commission straight off. He was supposed to take charge in a crisis.

But no use crying over spilt milk. She clapped her hands purposefully together, affecting an air of confidence she didn't feel. "Right then people. Let's get to it."

Donnie had been working in the background. The wordless communication of handing tools and having a similar goal without having to necessarily hold conversation was nice. So he quietly moved about, his knee feeling much better ( ... )

"I don't care what your priority list says, we need those biohazard suits down here, and we need them five minutes ago-" Jess bit back a curse and tossed to comm to another engineer and turned to head for the accident site; "Get that sorted, Wright, I need to go and organise the fault tracers..."

Suddenly someone was talking at her. She gave whoever it was a look of vaguely affronted confusion before recognising one of the computer specialists from up in sciences, the one that helped out in engineering sometimes. Blake? Beck? Something like that. She shook her head to clear it and mentally ran over his rambling. "Primary coolant pipeline ruptured, control relays are dead, yes there's a leak, no we can't stop it, and Scott and Miller were working on it when it blew," she summarised. "And if you've got a plan you'd better be able to explain it in less than thirty seconds, because I need to get people in to get them out of there now."

Taking a breath, "While the crystal resonance field effect transistor is definitely unreachable there is a backup control circuit usable as a fail safe. Usually this is activated manually but I can activate it remotely. With the backup activated we can shut off the valves. Five minutes, ten at most, if I start right now." Breathe.

Keeping close to Sevlon and Leonard while still making sure the decon teams kept up, Christine already had a horrible feeling this day was going to last forever.

Instructions received and accepted, she gave her CMO a nod, then waited for the others to start moving before spinning on her heels. "Decon team two, I want you to stick around here unless Doctors Sevlon or McCoy or I tell you otherwise. Help the Engineers when they need it. Triage all infected. Find me if you can't handle something. Zosto, I want you and another decon suit with me."

As the feathered nurse followed her, Christine made her way over to a person she'd spotted earlier. "Beck," she snapped, all business and no time for nonsense. Admittedly, though, if she was dealing with a crisis, Donnie and Zosto were among those she could count on. "Can you handle the ventilation system?"

Donnie startled at being handed the hazmat style suit. Hadn't it already been a bit too late for contamination procedures? And then he noticed the fact that they were being contained. He swallowed and clumsily stepped into the suit wishing he'd decided to depart a little earlier ( ... )

The stretchers on the move now, Leonard hung back long enough to comm the Bridge. He asked for sensor readings and reports about ship-wide contamination levels to aid Christine's efforts. Once the data was massed, he had Spock transfer the information. Readings began pouring over the screens, indicating a moderate but problematic spread of the toxic fumes. There was a high probability of largely inhabited sections of the ship being exposed.

Confident in the people taking care of things here, and his top priority already on the way to Sickbay, Leonard deactivated his com and followed.

The problem with crises, Christine decided, was that she couldn't do everything herself. Instead, she had to waste time making sure things were getting done the way they had to be done. Of course, there were still moments like this one where she was expected to do a little bit of everything. She spotted the Engineering ensign on the ladder just as one of her nurses handed her a PADD. "From the science department," was the official explanation ( ... )
