Day 30 - MESS HALL - [OPEN/INCOMPLETE]

Charlene stood at the replicator, her nose wrinkled in concentration as she stared down at the device. She never really liked these things - she always seemed to do something wrong, and for a picky person like Charlene, such mistakes were devastating. It was late - her normal medical blues were traded out for a loose-fitting starfleet t-shirt and ( Read more... )

Still in uniform and wanting a bit of company to go along with a before-crashing-for-the-night snack, Christine wandered into the mess hall to find it nearly empty. Casually taking in potential victims for her social neediness, she made her way over to a replicator, ordering a salad and milkshake.

And then she backtracked to a familiar face hidden in a book, sitting all alone. "Bon soir, Charlene. Mind if I sit here?"

"Christine." She looked up with a sweet smile, the chocolate chips incident far from her mind as she set the paper book down on the table, dog-earred and well loved. She shifted slightly to the side, and gestured to the empty chair beside her.

"By all means, mademoiselle, feel very free to do so." She lifted the mug of hot chocolate up to her lips, sipping it casually. "How is my most favorite head nurse this lovely evening?"

Smiling, Christine took the indicated chair, setting her tray down with a bit of a thunk. "I'm alright. Had an... interesting day, but what can you expect?" She gave a little chuckle as she shrugged her shoulders and picked up her fork. "And yourself, sweetheart?"

"It was dreadful, if I must say." Christine smiled nonetheless, taking a sip of hot chocolate, not saying anything more on the subject of her well being. "Yet I am still alive, and so are you. Is that not the point of life?" She swirled her spoon around in her mug, peering down at it.

"What was so interesting about your day?"

This called for some thoughtful chewing. "I suppose that's the basic, of life, yes," she replied when she had swallowed. There was more to life than just living, of course - pursuing your purpose, finding happiness, filling your life with love and meaning - but the French nurse had the gist down. You couldn't have the others without the first.

"Had a friend come in with a knee injury and some... interesting news. Then Tonia Barrows and I did a little decorating." An oversimplified report, yes, but those were the highlights.

"I am sure that you are very good at it." Rousseau's lips curled into a plaintive smile, her fingertips lacing at her chin, watching Christine from the corner of her eye.

"A knee injury you say? Is he alright?" Rousseau straightened, and her smile widened. "I see. So that is why the medical bay looks so very festive."

"If it counts for anything, you seem to excel at it, as well," Christine replied, giving a little shrug as she bit off a forkful of lettuce.

"Donnie's fine." And the fork became a gesturing tool, as her smile brightened. If her day had been miserable, well, then, at least some good had come of it. "Yeah, you like it?"
