Having spent a good chunk of her evening at the party, it would've been more like Christine to go back to her own quarters, take off her silly costume, and go to sleep. Feeling as though she had unresolved business wasn't going to let her do that, though, so instead she found herself tracing the familiar route to Cassie's quarters. The last few visits had been sly nursing. This one was a social call that she honestly didn't foresee having any control over the outcome of. It was just one of those nights.
A chime, a bright smile, and a greeting later, Christine was facing Cassie. Though the engineer was still clad in a "bloody" t-shirt, the nurse felt absurd in her wings and halo. Reaching up to take of at least the offending headband, she gave Cassie a smile that was somewhere around nervous.
"Hey," she said warmly, "You sure this isn't a bad time?"
"Resident sex god, oh gosh." Christine laughed a little as she entered the room. "That is my boss you're talking about, you know."
At Cassie's offer, Christine couldn't help but give the other woman a look. Was it really that easy to see how much of a pain the wings had been to pin on? And were inevitably going to be to take off? "That would be great, actually."
"True enough," Christine agreed, giggling a little as she turned to allow Cassie to work on her wings. Honestly, she doubted Leonard would ever be living tonight's costume down.
Dropping her halo on top of the wings - hey, why not? - she nodded at Cassie. "Sure. Whatever you're having."
Cassie went to a cupboard and got out a bottle of bourbon and two glasses. She poured a small shot in each and headed over to where Christine was standing.
"Here and come and share the bed with me." she said, "I would offer you a chair but I have my art stuff on it."
"Hey don't be nervous. I will admit that you are a very attractive person but I am not going to force myself on you. I really want to be your freind. So what brought you here? I thought that you and Cecil were rescuing the Doctor?" Cassie said with a grin.
Christine blinked hard a few times, then forced a bit of a smile as she ran a hand over the back of her neck - which was feeling increasingly feverish. She'd never done well with romantically forward individuals in the past and it seemed as if she hadn't grown out of it. Damn.
"Thanks," she said, taking the glass from Cassie. Then, clearing her throat, she perched herself lightly on the edge of the bed. "The Cecil and Doctor McCoy crises have been averted, I can say that much. And, well, I know our conversation earlier got clipped a little short, so I figured the least I could do was take you up on your offer."
Cassie moved up to the top of the bed to give her some space. She didn't want to crowd her. She really did feel romantically inclined to this woman but she meant what she said. She would be happy to have her among her friends as she was a really nice woman.
"That's cool. So what do you want to talk about?" She decided to let her dictate the conversation.
That way hopefully she wouldn't put her feet in it.
This was vaguely familiar, though: someone realizing how awkward Christine could be in even a semi-intimate setting and letting her take control of the situation. While she didn't like to make a habit of taking advantage of this, sometimes it helped.
"What made you decide to go into engineering?" Profession choices were always useful for nice, easy conversation.
Cassie smiled and said "Ever since I can remember I have had an interest in things mechanical. Some might even call it an obsession. And there is something about starships that gets me most of all. Mum and dad wanted at least one of us to go in to command. As that wasn't where my heart lay, that's where Andrew went. And now I have the Kudos of serving aboard the Enterprise."
"I think that's what never ceases to amaze me about this crew… it's the most passionate new people in all of Starfleet, stuck together on one neurotic starship," Christine smiled at her glass, giving it a swirl to watch the liquid move. "It's amazing, really."
Casting a careful look at Cassie, she hesitated a moment, then asked, "Did you want to talk about your brother?" There were all sorts of psychological benefits to it, really, and Cassie brought Andrew up enough to make Christine think he must have been something special.
Cassie looked at her and said, "He was the one that my parents had so many hope for. I sometimes got fogotten but I didn't mind. I loved him dearly and I went through my own personal hell for him to make sure he got to the Academy. He was doing so well and then he got the call to go and face Nero. He said that he was so proud to go and do this. I never really got to say goodbye to him."
She reached out to the leather jacket that lay on the back of the chair, "This was his. I keep it to remind me of him. Despite his failings he was one hell of a brother to have. I really really miss him. I also have a book that he got me too."
Christine's heart ached for Cassie. Poor girl. "I don't think it's possible to love someone who's perfect. Those people with the little faults are so much greater. I'm so sorry you lost him."
And then, because she was terribly tempted to do something crazy like cozy up to the other woman, Christine took a sip from her glass. And even that was a bit of a shock to her taste buds. She couldn't remember if she'd even touched bourbon since she'd been of a legal age to drink.
" How could one man take away so much? So much potential. So much greatness." Cassie sighed as she took a sip of her drink, "I don't just mean Andrew I mean everyone. The Vulcans. Everyone"
Then Cassie looked over at Christine. "Sorry this isn't what you came here for."
The little twinge in Cassie's voice was something Christine recognized among just about every individual in Starfleet that had survived the Battle of Vulcan, but most specifically Enterprise crew members or anyone who had lost someone. Then again, those fields overlapped quite a bit.
"I came here to spend time with you," Christine said, giving Cassie a small sidelong smile. "And that's what I'm doing, isn't it?"

Then she looked at Christine and said, "Come on in. Would you like a hand to take those wings off?"

Then as Christine asked for her help to Cassie said, " Come on then."
She fumbled around with the pins and eventually, after a few choice swear words, the wings were on the floor.
Cassie said, "Can I get a drink for you? Something from the replicator or I have something a little stronger."
