"The phoretic analyzer in Biolab Three is still broken," was the greeting Leonard got immediately upon arriving in Sickbay, early. Borad looked as uptight and judgmental he had the past two days of Pike's 'visit

Watching Leonard's interactions with Borad was enough to make anyone who knew the CMO agitated. Christine -who hadn't slept properly for days and who knew Leonard to be twice the doctor (and twice the man, for that matter) that any one of those… academics were - was getting downright pissy. Let's see how they got on running a medical bay that was more like the French Quarter during Mardi Gras than some safeguarded lab or classroom. She loved the science of medicine, yes, but she also loved people who showed a little respect for each other.
Borad did not fall into this category.
She was just about to snap something that would likely have got her written up when a few things happened: Leonard stalked away in a typical fashion, she got a good whiff of something that smelt like it came straight from the Bayou, and Tonia appeared.
"Yeoman," she called, because, hey, professionalism was taught by example, right? Then, softer as she caught up to Tonia and wrapped one hand around the brunette's upper arm, she said, "Unless it's really important, I'd suggest just letting him stew for a few minutes."
Lifting the box a little she glanced at Chris, back to where Leonard was storming of too, then one more glare at Borad. "I know how y'all been working real hard and skipping some of your meals. So I figured.. maybe something that actually tasted good might be welcomed."
With a grump of a sigh the Yeoman simply started to frown before her voice dropped low. "I don't like that man. Did you hear what he said to Doc? Oh I have every bit in my mind to have some of his paperwork just vanish out from under him!"
Like some sort of light at the end of a tunnel, Tonia, angry or no, was good to have around. "You're a sweetheart, you know that?" Christine said, trying to figure out exactly what the Yeoman had brought for them.
At the harsh sigh, though, Christine brought her attention back to Tonia. "Y'know, I wouldn't try to stop you if you did pull something like that." She kept her voice low as she steered Tonia across Sickbay, aiming for the empty work station next to the CMO's office. "That man deserves it. He and Carmichael and the rest of them strode in here like they owned the place, icy as you please. And you would think they would've warmed up, but no, they've gotten downright mean, especially towards the doctor." Huffing a little, she went on: "Is it too much to ask for a civil atmosphere in a place of healing?"
Even if she was madder than heck at the man who had berated McCoy, Chris' words were enough to make her blush a little. As if reading her mind she once again hefted the box a little. "Chicken Étouffée, white rice, two cups of crawfish bisque, and some strawberry crêpes." Following along beside of the nurse she once more shot Borad a glare that he seemed to be ignoring before setting her box down.
"He ain't got any right." Why was it that when she got mad her accent seeped through? The more she talked the thicker her drawl became. "Ain't got no rights at all t' be talkin' bout McCoy like that. Hell fire- if the Cap'n heard that.. woolhead talkin' like that I'm sure he'd give him a piece of his mind!"
Although, admittedly, some small part of her brain was stuck on crawfish bisque and strawberry crêpes, Christine folded her arms across her chest with a harsh breath of air through her nose.
"And that's just the problem, Ton, he doesn't have any right to say half the shit he does but there's not a hell of a lot we can do about it. They're supposedly our guests, -" Christine made angry little quotation marks in the air with her fingers, then promptly crossed her arms again,"- and since Pike brought them, we can't just kick 'em out. And the captain is almost certainly on the admiral's side, so there's no use going to him." She clicked her tongue angrily. "And you don't even know the horrible things they say about the way this Sickbay - this whole ship, even - are run, when they don't think anyone of importance is around."
"Alright, so how's the swelling going?" Leonard asked the patient he was currently seeing. It was a Spores victim, one who's system had unfortunately treated the infection as more an allergen than an aphrodisiac. The reaction had been severe and resistant to treatments. It was almost enough to rival Jim's worst reaction.
"It's gone down, but it's still painful to move," was the reply. Leonard sighed, trying to formuulate other options. His last thought got him to thinking, though. He excused himself briefly to pop into his office. There was a stash of antihistamines designed for Jim in there, which he kept on hand should something happen during a visit. He had a similar batch in his quarters too. There was always a chance of finding out about a new allergy the horrifying way.
Leonard was on his way in when he passed Christine and Tonia. He was about to nod and move on when he noticed it. A smell. That smell. Of Good Ol' Homecookin'. He stopped right in his tracks and turned to the two women. "I smell food. Good food. Do ya smell that?" It was entirely possible that in his fatigue and annoyance he was having an olfactory delusion. Because it sure smelt like heaven.
What was shaping up to be another spew of curses and threats from Tonia was interrupted by the man who was very well the cause of their grief. Anyone less stubborn as CMO, and maybe there wouldn't be so much tension. Not that Christine would trade Leonard for the world.
"As a matter of fact, I do," she said brightly, swiping Tonia's package off the table and holding it up for him to see. "We have a guardian angel who wants us to eat and her name is Tonia Barrows." While she wasn't any happier about the drama plaguing Sickbay than the two possessors of very thick accents when they were cranky, but if she could keep them distracted and placated, maybe things could run a bit smoother. She'd like to think they could get rid of those asshole academics with diplomacy, but it seemed like patience would help matters more.
Leonard looked down at the package, eyes blinking a bit wide as his nose helped itself to more of that great aroma. Holy sweet Jesus at a barbecue. It was Homecookin'. Briefly, he forgot about being a doctor. And was just a simple Southern man.
"Is that... étouffée? My god, I haven't had that in ages." He looked up at Christine, then over to Tonia. And smiled briefly. "Well, far be it for me to disappoint a lady." He may be a Southern man, but the Southern doctor wasn't forgotten long. He had a patient in duress he needed to tend to first, before he did any tending to himself. Leonard was also sure that if Borad caught wind of this little informality, he'd just use that against them all.
"Eh... why dontcha bring that on in here?" he gestured to his office. "You can set it out on my desk an' come an' go as ya please." He consciously reigned in his accent and finally went inside for one of those histamine hypos.
As Leonard rooted through the collection of antihistamines he generally kept in case of Kirk Emergencies, Christine tossed a grin at Tonia. "I'm sure you know the saying about the way to a Southern man's heart," she said, still focused on keeping her energy positive for the sake of everyone's sanity. "Well, since he's not getting much of the booze or the sex, he's particularly susceptible to food."
Heading into the office herself, delicious food in hand, she winked at Leonard. "Isn't that right, Leo?"
Oh way to get Tonia totally starting to stumble over her words with that, Christine. "I wasn't... That saying..." Blushing bright red the Yeoman ducked her head and moved to help the nurse with the items she had brought down. Whatever she was about to say was totally lost on her at the second part of her friends comment. It wasn't that big of a secret between them that she was sort of sweet on doctor- when she got the guts to do so. Commenting on sayings, sex, and being susceptible to food just sort of blew it out of the water. Tonia hadn't meant it in any sort of way other than being nice.
"Sometimes I think you enjoy teasing me way to much, Christine," the woman grumbled slightly.
During the Spores Incident, nothing had been sacred. Biosuit or his poor office, it'd been violated, often in ways that just defied comprehension. Leonard had to reclaim the entire room inch by inch, then reorganize. So naturally, he couldn't find a damn thing yet. Digging around, he only vaguely caught what Christine was saying.
"Mmmm... yeah," he replied absently as he checked the contents of one hypo. No, he thought he'd tried that one already on his patient. But that got him to thinking... And thinking got that little alarm system going off in his head. He suddenly came back to the present, blinking over at Christine. "Wait, whut?" Had to be careful about that. Last time he didn't pay close enough attention, she'd managed to wrangle him into doing that program overhaul he'd been avoiding. That woman was wily.
A blush from Tonia and a near-one from Leonard. Christine was on a roll.
"Food, booze, and sex," she told him, laughing. Honestly, it was a wonder she could ever get him to listen to her. Not that it was out of disrespect, his head was just always other places. "The three guaranteed ways to a Southern man's heart. And when you're not getting the latter two, the first is more important."
.... Well, shit, he didn't know how to respond to that. Partly because it was the truth, sadly. And partly because Christine had nooo idea just what Leonard had been getting lately.
Except maybe a little warmer. Had to be the blowers in the office. Looking at Tonia, he could see she was uncomfortable too.
"Woman, have some crepes. Yer obviously goin' faint with fatigue." Leonard rolled his eyes at his head nurse, but it was in a tolerantly exasperated -- yes, even his eye rolls had moods -- manner. He plucked up the hypo he needed, then paused to also pluck up one of them fat, fresh strawberries. Popped it in his mouth with a wink to Tonia, sucked some syrup off his fingers, then murmured, "Wonderful, mucha'bliged. I'll be back in two twitches of a Caitian's whiskers fer some more." He was then out the door, making long strides back over to his patient.
As soon as Leonard was out the door, Tonia was playfully slapping Christine on the arm. "You are rotten you know that? One hundred percent rotten!" Of course the Yeoman couldn't help but giggle a little as she spoke. Out of all the people on the ship the head nurse had to be her best friend and the most brash of them as well.
Quietly the woman checked to see if the doctor was anywhere near the door when she spoke up again. "I'll let the girls know. I'm sure we can come up with something to get even with Borad-ass out there. I mean.. paperwork gets lost... sometimes.."
"What?" Christine exclaimed, part playful innocence and part genuine confusion. While, on one hand, she had been trying to tease the two out of their anger, on the other, she felt like she was missing something. Ah, well, questions for another day.
Picking up one of the cups of bisque - just to open the lid and smell it - she nodded at Tonia's offer. "Sweetie, the whole ship knows paperwork doesn't get lost unless a Yeoman wants it to get lost," she said, smirking. "But I don't know if the academics are smart enough to know that."
Rolling her eyes a bit, Tonia sighed as she settled leaning against one of the objects in the office. She wasn't going to take a seat- in theory she shouldn't have stayed there as long as she had since she wasn't on the staff there. "Oh you know perfectly well what I mean, you goober!"
With a click of her tongue against the roof of her mouth the Yeoman crossed her arms under her chest simply watching and eying the door. "I know the type. They think we're all stupid since we're not graduates from the Academy. We can play it up a little.."
