♘ CHARACTER INFORMATION
[ name ] Ffamran Mid Bunansa Balthier Bunansa
[ fandom ] Final Fantasy XII
[ canon point ] Post-game, before Revenant Wings
[ age ] 23
[ personality ] Balthier is a Sky Pirate and, being as such, he is very selfish. He has no trouble doing what is needed in order to get what he wants, whether it’s treasure or the cooperation of certain people. However, what he wants most is his freedom-something that he has found while flying the skies. That being said, Balthier is also very suave--he knows how to use his charms to get himself and others out of sticky situations (not to mention the heart of women). In addition, he loves to have attention and is one of the cockiest, most egotistical men alive. He often refers to himself as “The Leading Man,” referring to the main hero of stories. Balthier can also be very laid back and handles hard matters with a sophisticated-and somewhat witty-manner. He’s known for making wisecracks, such as when a sword is pointed at him and he replies with, “Well, at least you’re sword is to the point.” In addition, he keeps himself very tidy and clean (or, at least he would like to).
Though all of the above are a part of his personality, it is also, in a way, a façade. Yes, he cares more for his well-being and his own gain, however he also holds a special place for those he trusts. Especially Fran. It is not likely for a Vierra to be a partner with a human and yet Balthier will trust Fran with his life, if not his assets. Balthier would never leave her behind if something was to happen to her, and she would do the same. However, it is not certain whether their relationship is strictly professional or not. He shows the same sort of care (although to a lesser extent) to the others of his party as well.
[ history ] Balthier Bunansa, or Ffamran Mid Bunansa, is the third son of Cidolfus Demen Bunansa (Dr. Cid for short). When Balthier was just sixteen, he was made into an Archaedian Judge by his father (a special order of knights who are the supreme enforcers of Archadian law). To Balthier, this was like a cage, as he had no control over his life. Soon enough, Balthier began to grow wary of his father’s growing madness and was unable to tolerate his father’s talking about returning “The reins of history back into the hands of Men.” This, combined with the way in which Archadia was moving, made Balthier run away from his life and steal one of the fighter ships, which, over the years, he updated the ship and named the Strahl. It is not known exactly how, but eventually Balthier partnered up with a Vierra by the name of Fran, who joined him in his Sky Pirate endeavors. Since then, Balthier has been flying the skies, running away from his past, bounty hunters and authorities while in pursuit of his treasure.
We are first introduced to Balthier when Vaan breaks into the Royal Palace of Rabanastre. Once he sees Vaan steal a stone known as the Goddess’ Magicite, Balthier demands that Vaan hand it over. However, once introductions are made the Ifrit attack, allowing Vaan to run away with the distraction and causing Balthier and Fran to follow him. They go up to the rooftop, where Balthier proceeds to make a quick decision to toss himself and Vaan off the side of the roof and onto Fran’s hover. However, due to the stone, the hover crashes into the Garmsythe Waterway, and the three are forced to work together.
After traveling through the Garmsythe, the three meet up with Amalia (or Lady Ashe), who is a leader of the Resistance. The three save her from some soldiers and she joins their party. However, it is not soon after that they are all arrested by Vayne Solidor and are taken to the Nalbina Dungeons.
There, Vaan runs into some trouble trying to play the hero so, of course, Balthier has to step in and show the young amateur how it’s done. After that’s taken care of, Fran joins them to explain that she has found an exit, but can’t open it. A Judge appears, as well as a bounty hunter who is after Balthier named Ba’Gamnan. However, it just so happens that the Judge is going in the same direction as the exit, and so they decide to follow him in order to escape.
It is after following him that they meet Basch, an ex-soldier who was framed for killing the king. Unfortunately, Vaan decides to make a racket and so they are forced to escape on top of Basch’s cage down to the bottom of the shaft. Basch explains his story and it is then that Balthier invites him to join his party. After many fights and annoying battery mimics, they escape and head back to Rabanastre.
Balthier and Fran leave the others in order to have a nice drink, but their rest does not last long. They soon find out that Ba’Gamnan, the headhunter after Balthier, has kidnapped Penelo, Vaan’s lifelong friend. Feeling slightly responsible for Penelo’s kidnapping, Balthier agrees to fly to Bhujerba and help get her back.
Once in Bhujerba, the party heads to the Lhusu Mines. On their way, they meet up with a young boy who calls himself Lamont and who is also heading into the mines. So, as one huge party, they head into the mines to pursue Ba’Gamnan. Eventually, they reach the part of the mine where the nethicite is cultured, and Lamont starts talking about a few things a normal kid shouldn’t know-such as Balthier’s father. Naturally, Balthier gets suspicious and starts to interrogate the young kid but is interrupted by Ba’Gamnan and his crew. The party soon learns that they let Penelo go prior to coming in and, with some quick thinking on Lamont’s part, manage to make an escape while following him. Once they reach the exit, however, it is revealed that Lamont is Vayne Solidor’s younger brother, Larsa. Penelo is also with Larsa at this point as a guest, and the two walk away with the Marquis.
In order to reach the Marquis, the party decides to try and get in touch with the Resistance by claiming that Vaan was Basch, someone who was thought to be dead. Vaan leaves them to do this and manages to get himself caught, but Balthier and the others follow and save him just as he’s about to get into more trouble. Lo and behold, the plan worked and now they have a meeting with the Marquis.
The meeting does not go as well as they hoped, and Amalia is nowhere to be found. The Marquis does make a little bit of a hint that Amalia is with Judge Ghis on his ship and so, much to Balthier’s discontent, Basch draws his sword on the Marquis. This, of course, gets all of them arrested and onto the Leviathan.
There, they meet Amalia and learn that she is Lady Ashe, the princess who was believed to have killed herself. Ashe is taken away and the others overcome the guards with the help of a man named Vossler, who is working with Ashe in the Resistance. They rescue Ashe, fight Judge Ghis, and all is well as they return to Bhujerba and have yet another meeting with the Marquis.
Many political issues are brought up in this meeting and Balthier requests a bath and a pair of clean clothing. Annoyed at the way the meeting ended, Ashe attempts to steal Balthier’s ship in the middle of the night. Luckily, Vaan catches her, the others join them on the ship, and they all decide to “kidnap” the princess and head to Raithwall’s Tomb to find the Dawn Shard-the thing that will prove Ashe’s royalty.
Raithwall’s Tomb is full of monsters and, of course, the Dawn Shard. Said shard is collected and just as they leave they are, once again, arrested by the Imperials and brought onto the Leviathan.
There, Balthier is threatened (“Well, at least your sword is to the point”) and Ashe gives up the Dawn Shard to save him. Vossler turns out to be a traitor, greedy Ghis attempts to use the Dawn Shard, which sends the Mists awry, causing Fran to go berserk and knock out the guards and the engines to fail. The party escapes just as the Leviathan and nearby ships of the fleet blow up.
The party heads to even more places to help Ashe in her pursuit of royalty. They visit the Garif, where they are reunited with Larsa and are asked to head to Bur-Omisace. Once there, they learn about the Sword of Kings-the sword that is capable of destroying nethicite. The sword, of course, is obtained and they head to the Draklor Laboratory to try and destroy the Dusk Shard.
Over the course of this journey Balthier has begun to realize that his father was not actually insane, but rather, was talking to an Occurian by the name of Venat. Wanting to confront his father, Balthier decides to accompany the party to Archades-his previous home. This is also where the Draklor Laboratory is. When they finally reach Dr. Cid, Balthier tries to convince him that what he is doing is insane. However, Cid ignores him and runs away, but not before telling them to go to Giruvegan.
In Giruvegan, the party learns about the Occuria (the most powerful beings in the world of Ivalice) and their role in the history of Ivalice. After this, they head to the Ridorana Cataract to find and destroy the Sun Cryst (a source of power created by the Occuria). It is here that Balthier decides it is time to pass down his knowledge and teaches Vaan how to fly the Strahl. Clearly planning for his grand finale.
They find the Sun Cryst, but before Ashe has the chance to destroy it, Dr. Cid appears and calls forth the Mist from the Cryst and directs it at the Bahamut. Throughout the battle, Balthier continues to try and convince Dr. Cid that what he is doing is still insane, but Dr. Cid continues to ignore him. Dr. Cid eventually summons the Esper Famfrit, and after a long battle, dies. Balthier is disappointed to see his father die continuing to believe that what he was doing was best for mankind.
However, he does not have much time to sulk, as Reddas, another sky pirate who was fighting alongside them, destroys the Sun Cryst--causing an explosion of mist to occur and little time for the party to escape.
They do manage to escape, but only to find that there is a fight occurring between the Rozzaria and Resistance against Archadia. They also learn that Vayne Solidor is flying the ever so powerful Bahamut.
Naturally, the party could not just stand on the sidelines, and so they head to the Bahamut where they fight down its defenses and, eventually Vayne. While the rest of the party negotiate a ceasefire and plan an escape route on the Strahl (driven by Vaan), Balthier and Fran stay behind on the Bahamut in order to fix the glossair rings and move it so it doesn’t fall on Rabanastre. Though the others seem worried for the two sky pirates, Balthier is not afraid. This can be seen when he says, “I hope you haven’t forgotten my role in this little story. I’m the leading man. You know what they say about the leading man. He never dies.” Of course, Balthier manages to fix the glossair rings, but when he looks over to Fran he sees that she has been buried under some rubble. Walking over to her with a quick mutter of, “Do I have to do everything around here?” He starts the glossair rings and picks up Fran who, much to his demise, calls him “a supporting role.” Balthier tells Vaan to watch after the Strahl for him until he returns, and the rest of the party is forced to watch as the Bahamut crashes outside the city. Thus, Balthier and Fran are believed to be dead.
It’s a year later, however, that the Strahl has vanished from its spot in the aerodrome and, in its place, is a letter from Balthier and Ashe’s wedding ring (which she had lent as payment for his services). And so, the Leading Man continues to tell his story.
[ appearance ]
here [ abilities ] Balthier is quite the good marksman (his gun is his preferred weapon), a well as an engineer and mechanic. He is also very knowledgeable, often throwing out facts, history lessons, etc at his lovely comrades. In addition, Balthier is a master of improvisation, as he is always able to get himself and others out of sticky situations by coming up with strategic plans on the spot. This also comes in handy when he ‘s attempting to steal something.
♛ WONDERLAND INFORMATION [ allegiance ] 1. MAFIA, 2. Royalists 3. Carnival(rank according to preference)
[ chosen weapon for the shifter ] His
gun [ form of the shifter when not in use ] The green ring on his finger
♗ SAMPLES [ first person ] Wonderland, you say? Down the rabbit hole, and all that? Here I thought that was just a story. I suppose it would be too much to ask for ships here, considering I am now underground. Hardly fitting for one who calls himself a sky pirate.
Now then, all that dirt has made me go and dirty my clothes. Now that introductions have been taken care of, a place such as this should be able to provide some shelter, as well as a nice bath. A spare set of clothing too, I should say. Best someone explain the situation to me quickly. I don’t take kindly to being kidnapped or thrust into battles without my own will. Just something to keep in mind to those who are in charge here.
[ third person ] Balthier walked through the forest, taking in his surroundings. He had seen his share of strange things, but this one made them all look normal. This wasn’t exactly what he would consider a great vacation spot that was for sure.
Balthier couldn’t help but sigh with an annoyed undertone. He had just gotten back the Strahl from the others and yet here he was, walking through a forest, in a rabbit hole. He mentally scolded himself. Why, oh why did he decide to jump down here? He doubted there was much treasure to be found. But one could dream, right? And that, he was sure, was exactly what he was doing.
He slowed his pace as he thought about the situation at hand. They expected him to fight in some war, did they? Hadn’t he and the others just fought in their own world? Either someone was playing a cruel trick, or he was beginning to grow as insane as his father.
He gave a small “tch” as he quickly got that thought out of his mind. He pulled his gun over his shoulder more and quickened his pace. First thing was first: he had to find his partner and, if he was lucky, the others from his world. After all, in order for a story to be good, a Leading Man requires supporting characters.
