There was a point where humanity won the evolutionary ladder game. We rose huge concrete monuments to our progress and greatness and decimated the land around us. There are no challengers now to satiate our thirst for a conquerable enemy.
Thus it seems that we feed on each other, groups form and vie for superiority over each other, trying to fulfill the need to be the top of the species. There is no reason to band together because, how would that bring growth?
The majority of people seem content to devour each other to climb the ladder. It is after all the imperative of evolution to become strong upon the backs of others, to reach the dominant position.
