Dion't blame the moon, it only glows

Another night comes to the station. Or night cycle, anyway. And with it come the usual phantasmagorias of sleep... though tonight, there's something special. Here and there might be a shape out the corner of an eye, or a figure glimpsed dimly in the distance. Closer-up it's a thing like an adult, womanly shape, carved out of shadow and specks of ( Read more... )

Lafiel is running down the corridors of the Basroil, though the state of disrepair reminds her more of the Junkstation's worst parts. There is some kind of military inspection and she has forgotten all about it, so needs to fix everything as quickly as she can.

In other words, your classic anxiety dream. At least she's not naked?

There is that, at least. For a dream of worry, it shows a better state of mind than most of the ones Roxie has wormed her way into.

That strange shadow-figure stalks the corridors. It is not so grand and terrible as the monsters of true nightmares, but there is a certain grace and beauty to it... and a tendency to slide from the gaze. The dream-characters ignore it completely.

Lafiel does not notice it for now, busily giving orders to crew who are unexpectedly sluggish and tearing at machinery.

Here and there the figure pauses, leaning in at odd and fluid angles to watch the ongoing work, but its interest is never held for very long. Lafiel is the real focus of the thing's attention.

She eventually came to someone that might actually be familiar. "Jinto-"

Jinto nodded. "The cargo is stowed and the inventories are in the computer. I checked all our life-support systems myself. Everything is ready for inspection."

"Right." The sudden calm seemed to throw Lafiel off. She paused. "Do you think we're being being followed? I keep feeling something moving around behind me."

The shadow-figure stretches, dimensionlessly, overlapping Jinnto's shadow. "I haven't seen anything," he says. There's something a little off, somehow, about the way he talks...

"Jinto?"

As if responding to this new undercurrent, the dreamscape starts to shift, people in the background fading away, and lighting dropping from ship's day to something more ominous.

The shadow withdraws, letting the dream-Jinnto answer as smoothly as if the reply had been its own. But it still lurks-wanting to see what this new shift in the dream reveals...

"What is it?"

Lafiel looked around, taking in the new, darker direction the dream had taken. "We need to get to the bridge and find out what's going on. Come with me."

The shadow-figure skims after them, less walking than gliding. Curious, curious...

Laifel stops at a convenient computer panel, reading it quickly. "We've got boarders. How... how did they get on board? Why did they get on board? This isn't a big ship, and they should have just expended the ammunition to kill us. All hands, retreat to these sections and arm yourselves. Keep pressure suits at the ready in case of hull breach. Jinto..."

Lafiel paused, looking around. While her back was turned, the dream image of her friend had faded away, leaving her alone in empty, half-lit halls. "Jinto?"

The shadow lurks behind her, looming... though that's more just a function of it being rather taller, in that disproportionate way that tends to happen in dreams.

Lafiel wasted no time before going to a weapons locker and arming herself. Even if there was nothing in the set of corridors besides shadows.

Really, she could have left some time before, but the continuing progression of the dream-approaching something more like a real nightmare, now-keeps Roxie's attention.

The figure continues to silently watch Lafiel.

It did seem to be a real nightmare, in that the corridors grew more maze-like, with the shadows of foes -- or friends -- just out of Lafiel's reach. Which was obviously putting her on edge as her reactions grew more and more jumpy.
