I wonder how long it'd take before I got space madness.

I was going to post something that wasn't a book review for a change, but then I had two books on the same general theme for the weekend, and I ended up reading them both. So I thought I'd review them both at the same time. So, on the theme of disaster, isolation and survival in a sci-fi setting I take on The Martian by Andy Weir, and The Explorer ( Read more... )

books, mission: books!, review: books, science!, sci-fi

The Martian!!! I *loved* this book. I, too, had it recommended by a friend (repeatedly), before I eventually found it on special offer and bought it just to see what all the fuss was about. I started reading it on Saturday afternoon and had finished reading it by Sunday afternoon, after canceling all my other plans for the weekend and recording everything on the TV and just reading solidly. The only reason I actually managed to put it down long enough to go to bed and sleep on the Saturday night was because I was feeling ill that weekend and *really* needed the sleep!

It's been a very long time since a book grabbed me that much that I literally could not put it down. \o/

It was so good! I was looking forward to reading it, but it was so much better than I was hoping, just a genuinely fun book that wasn't boring for a second. I read the whole thing yesterday afternoon/evening and I was so glad I didn't have to stop halfway through because I needed to know what happened to him.

The Martian sounds interesting, does he survive? Most space fics seem to end in catastrophe and some/all characters dying. Or I need to find better ones LOL!

Honestly I was fully expecting The Martian to end in catastrophe, I was prepared for it.

(spoilers)

But, no, he survives at the end. Absolutely worth it.

Thanks for the spoiler - wow - unexpected. I'll stick it on my maybe list in that case, it sounds interesting but I like survival over 'they all die' fics.
