Contact Your Senator!

This journal is for my fandoms and 'ships, but now I feel compelled to make a political point. I write slash. I believe that homosexual relationships are no less than heterosexual ones.

The United States Senate is set to vote on a defense bill which includes provisions to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy which prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly in our armed forces. This is unequal and wrong.

Twenty-four countries allow homosexuals to serve openly in their militaries, including Great Britain, Australia, Israel, Canada, and even South Africa. South Africa! Not that far out from apartheid and now more equal than the US. There has been no hideous impact on troop cohesion. I spent nine months living in Australia and gay/lesbian military service was a non-issue. By the way, of these twenty-four countries, twenty-two are allied with troops serving with Americans in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

Senator John McCain, who once said that if military leaders wanted to repeal DADT he would vote for it, has changed his tune. Military leaders have said this, but McCain has talked of a filibuster. A filibuster allows even one senator to prevent the peoples' representatives from voting. It is against the very principles on which the U.S. was founded.

Americans, get in touch with your senator if you care about equality and keeping qualified men and women serving in our armed forces!!!
