Dear Posterity
I live just around the corner from the local RSL club. When I first moved to Upwey, it was pretty much a fibro-cement shed with a bar in one corner, but some time in the early years of this millenium, while I was living at the other end of Upwey and had little reason to come West of Burwood Highway, they tore down the shed and built a very fine edifice with a pleasant, wood-pannelled intirior and a wide verandaed exterior. All in all, it's a really nice space.
It has two great drawbacks for me, the first being that it has a cross-membership deal with the local football club and the second being that it's just too convenient. It is literally two minutes' walk from my front door. If any of my friends dropped in regularly, I could easily treat it as an extra room in my home and that would not be good for my liver.
But that's not the point.
When I first moved in here, it had a naval theme, a masthead attached to one of the balconies and a real ship's anchor sitting out the front on the lawn, but that's all changed now. From the start of this year, it's gone all army. The anchor has been replaced by a tank. I haven't looked closely, so I don't know the exact type, but what concerns me is that the main gun is set for distance and I'm pretty sure it's aimed at the local primary school, although that's a pretty long range for a tank. Chances are that the shell would land on a house.
So yes, we have tanks on the streets of Upwey but we are staying calm and hoping Nato air=strikes will not be required.
