Ooku The Inner Chambers - manga review

Aug 12, 2010 01:39

On October 1, 2010 Nino will appear in Ohoku the movie. For a while i wasn't too excited about this movie, because I really didn't like Nino's Edo period hairstyle (atsubin). But then someone from my friends list brought my attention to the newly uploaded trailer on the official website:  http://ohoku.jp/ (third choice from the left in the menu, but is probably also on youtube, probably with subs too).

That trailer looked really good and made me wish for Oct. 1 already! XD
So since I got intrigued by the story, I checked the net for the manga, and yay I found it!

You can read it online here, at mangago! ^^

The manga was written by Yoshinaga Fumi, and the movie covers the first 3 Chapters of Volume 1.
Nino plays the character called Mizuno Yuunoshin, who is the son of a poor samurai house, handsome and very popular with women.

His love interest is Onobu, his childhood friend. Since she is from a rich family, he has no chance of marrying her, so he decides not to marry and goes to the inner chambers of the female shogun, the Ohoku.
So he gets his silly looking haircut and goes off, but gives a farewell kiss to Onobu before he leaves. (scene 1 of interest)
Ohoku is a messed up place stuffed with bishounen, and every yaoi fangirl's heaven. :P
Mizuno is still a newbie and out of place. He is more lively and brutish, while the others are well, more feminine or subdued. Since there are no women in Ohoku, and the men are there solely to bed the shogun, they have to cope with all the sexual tension somehow. Especially since the present shogun is still only a sickly child, and the one before her was an old lady... They initiate every newbie with some not too kind buttsex! But Mizuno is against this, and is very forceful about it, so he shakes off his attempted rapers. (scene 2 of interest)

Mizuno has samurai fighting spirit, and he is attracted to fencing. He beats a really good fencer and becomes the talk of the Ohoku. His fame raises him to the level of bishounen, who are presented before the shogun to bed. He gets to have his clothes made, and he requests the sempster to make him a dress that's all black. He praises the work of the sempster and offers him payment, but the sempster only asks for a beautiful memory. This is the male kissing scene. (scene 3 of interest)

The child shogun dies and is followed by a puritan young woman. When it's time for her to choose a companion for the night, she ends up choosing Mizuno, because she likes his simple black dress and his directness.

But by choosing Mizuno, she also signed his death sentence, because it's the Ohoku tradition that the first man to bed the shogun must be killed thereafter. Mizuno accepts his fate with solemn resignation. He only regrets not being able to see Onobu again.
At night, in the shogun's chambers, he asks the shogun her name, and learns it is Nobu, the same as his love's. So he makes a request to be allowed to call the shogun by her name that night. She complies, and there follows a passionate bedscene. (scene 4 of interest)

The shogun does not wish for Mizuno to die (he must have been pretty good in bed! XD), so she appears at his beheading and lets him leave Ohoku. Mizuno is presumed to be dead for the rest of the world. He goes back to Onobu, and they reunite.

The end of this story arc.

This was an interesting story arc, but I liked the one after this one better. Still this story has at least 4 scenes of interest to look forward to in the movie! I wonder if they'll have them all. Well, the male kissing scene has already been confirmed, so that leaves a female kissing scene, an attempted rape scene and a bedscene to be expected. October 1, where are you?! :D
I'm not sure Nino fits Mizuno's character that well though... Mizuno seemes to be taller and a bit more strongly built. Nino is too frail for me, though his expressions will probably steal the show anyway, so whatever. XD

Well, the poster follows the manga pretty closely so far, which is a promising sign I believe! :)
