the last days of Memphis

Dec 10, 2005 15:05

barely slept all week and the big payoff was that all my critiques went perfectly and i've slept for most of the past 24 hours. now i just have those 4 papers to write for monday: 2 on the Vietnam War, one on the best poem ever written, and one on puppetry. so rev your engines Brick.

the end of painting class yesterday was surreal. i played a song for everybody on the balcony of the building . the sun was in my eyes but it shined for everybody else, planes flew overhead, birds chirped and people danced. it was as if my music blended in perfectly with the day.
after I finished alot of people said they'd miss me and were sorry I was going, then they asked me all about it and when i was leaving. i got kinda tired of telling them. then i went to talk to my teacher and these two other guys, all of which i 've been hanging out with all semester (of everybody in the class, i think the three of us have our art figured out the most). they were joking about how my teacher never gives an A, but he said "oh i think the A in this class goes to Brick because he's so fucking awesome."
for a second i didn't want to leave.
But Leslie had called me earlier in the day. she was in our new apartment. so the second passed and inside myself I said "sorry, Tad, Caleb, Granville, all you other guys. I've got a better life ahead of me and it includes a certain girl that I just can't live without."

i sat on the balcony playing guitar for a while. i haven't done that since millsaps. then a few people came back outside and asked me to play my song again. play it again sam. it's an intense peice. i play it with my delay pedal and in between percussive noise their is the subtle hint of melody. I've been looking at a lot of Rothko's work, and I wanted to do something with the same level of emotional intensity and poignancy as one of his paintings. I wanted people to feel not just what I have but what my family and Leslie have since august. I can't speak for them, but i think i've done that for me.
