strange dreams

I had a strange dream the other night.

There was some sort of pervasive evil in the world, some sort of impurity that was endangering the human race. A scant few were able to fight, and so the world went on as it always had, only with people being slaughtered here and there. Suddenly, I was thrust into a role as someone's apprentice, an old man who had some crazy powers and was totally badass and killed the evil things.

He kept promising that someday I'd be able to fill his shoes, but I didn't really have any powers, so I was just doing sidekick things, ducking out of the way at the last moment, bringing the things he needed to save the day, etc. There was some dude named Filbert who was a know-it-all douche and somehow he was on the good guys' side, but he wasn't really doing much.

Eventually my master gave me a test, and he was like, "Filbert scored 40 on this test. You must prove yourself!" and administered the test, which was just like a bunch of questions like, "Where does Sarah Anderson of Watson Grove buy her groceries?" or "In Alchester Square, a relic lies buried for 200 years. What is it?", just crap I'd never heard of. Apparently Filbert had studied and really DID know it all, but if I was supposed to surpass him, I figured I had some sort of special ability, so I closed my eyes and guessed at them all. Out of 50 I got 24, and my master seemed pretty happy. "You're not psychic, but you've got some ability at least." There wasn't any such thing as psychic abilities, just magic, and I'd done better than any normal person could have done.

It turns out that magic existed, but it was a corrupting force and the reason for all the mayhem being caused by the ghosts/monsters/dream things. Some people tried to master magic to fight back, but they would inevitably be cursed by it and become something even worse than the things they fought against. My bloodline, however, was pure and from times immemorial the people of my bloodline that kept their line pure had abilities to deal with these things. But in my family there was only my mother and my sister, and no male presence whatsoever. How was I born, I wondered, if my line was kept pure and i had these abilities? I stared at this old man. Was he my grandfather? My father?

He seemed to read my thoughts, however, and assured me that he was older than I could have believed, and that men of my lineage had disappeared for some number of decades. This puzzled me even more; where did I come from?

He drew a sword and told me that the sword was my father.

It was crazy and awesome and then it was about time to wake up, so I went around trying to kill as many evil things as I could before the morning crept into my eyes and I wasn't able to dream anymore.
