jeauexe Awkward.
Awkward.
You see how easily they jump on him, wish him a happy birthday and receive such a warm smile in return. But when you try to do it, the words stick in your throat and even though you really, really want to express your words, they just won't come out. And you feel so small and awkward and useless when this happens, again and again even if you've practised it a dozen times in front of the mirror and recited it to yourself over and over again until people started asking if you were alright.
Later, you sit frozen to your chair as he chatters on about all the gifts and well wishes he'd received earlier on in the day. You can't do what everyone else can, to just siddle up to him and wish him a happy birthday. I makes you feel so awkward, unnatural, out of place, when everyone else can just drop it as they pass by.
His voice brings you abruptly from your thoughts.
Ne, ne, what's wrong?
Did I do something wrong?
I did, didn't I?
What did I do wrong?
You shake your head and force out a smile.
Nothing. Nothing's wrong.
Really.
Suddenly, someone is calling him.
He gets up and smiles hesitantly.
Well...if you're sure.
You reassure him, but just before he's out of the room, you call his name and wait until he turns back and you say...
Happy Birthday.
He looks confused for a moment, then directs a smile at you. You could swear that smile was brighter and shinier than any other smile he'd ever given anyone.
And then, you smile too.
