A deer, just my luck...

Tonight, I hit a deer. God, I have the worst luck. That's exactly what my mother said to me, too, when I told her I had hit a deer--"You have the worst luck."

It happened about two hours ago and I still can't get my heart to slow down--gahh!

Luckily, I didn't do much damage to my car, just dented the front of the hood, right where the mechanism that keeps the hood shut is--of course! So, mother had me pop the hood to see whether I did any damage to the radiator--thankfully, not--radiators seem to be sister's specialty, not mine. I just hit things, or as my dad likes to call it, customizing the car. But the blood along the driver's side isn't part of the customization, it's just plain gross.

Stupid deer, darting right out in front of my car like that. You would think the animals would have just a little sense--if you are running alongside a car, don't suddenly decide to run in front of it!

Well, my heart slowed down a little--ranting helps. I want to feel bad about hurting, possibly killing the deer--I didn't stop because it was 10 pm, dark and I don't have a cell phone, so what good would stopping had done--give the deer CPR? I think not. I want to feel bad, but I don't and that probably sounds horribly callous of me, but it's true. I did everything I could to avoid hitting the animal and so it does me no good to feel regret for something that I couldn't have done anything about, so I don't feel bad.

I am just glad that the deer didn't end up in the passenger seat, sitting right next to me, because that would have so been of the bad. And if someone not from Michigan or somewhere where deer aren't routinely hit by automobiles thinks that me not wanting the deer in the seat next to me is exaggerating, it is not. You hit a deer and there are 3 ways it can go: you hit it, it goes up over the top of the car--this happens to smaller cars with low centers of gravity; it goes under the car--trucks, vans, SUVs, any fairly good sized vehicle; or it goes off to one of the sides--any kind of car, either not hitting it head on or hitting it at slower speeds.

Luckily, I was breaking when I hit it because I hit it head on, dead center of my hood, right where the catch mechanism is. If I hadn't braked, there is a good chance that my hood would have acted just like a wedge and, instead of glancing off my hood and around my driver's side, the deer would have slid up my hood and hit my windshield.

But that didn't happen, so it is all good, except for the dead deer. Stupid deer. Good example of natural selection though. *grin*
