One time I saw this video demonstration of how cats fall, slowed down and labeled with arrows so you could see how the mechanics of their ancient technique worked. They literally twist themselves around in the air, like little fuzzy roto-rooters, so that they land inevitably on all four feet. It's amazing, really, no matter how they fall, however short or long a distance. And whatever the circumstances, I mean, this video showed cats jumping, falling, being tossed, dropped sideways, face first, feet first, flung by the tail, from windows, from passing trains, at passing trains. It was a very thorough documentary. And they always landed on their feet.
Mainly, though, I took away from this educational film that cats twist themselves mid-air while falling, regardless of the circumstances, and land on their feet. Right? This is not news.
I went to set Koji down on the floor, gently, slowly, my own body bent over, even, so he had less far to fall himself. But, somehow, between the moment when I released him from my hands and the moment he made contact with the floor, he managed to twist himself around so landed on the floor flat on his back.
And then he sat there for a minute staring at me with his little paws in the air like it was my fault he was a disgrace to his species.
But right before this embarassment, he greeted me at the door after I came home (yes, at 12:30 in the afternoon damn it!) by clomping down the stairs and mewing maniacally then purring like a motor and sniffing at my face when I picked him up. There is no other way to come home.
