so i went to a protest this morning. it was a protest against gay marriage in front of city hall in this place called Dundas. there was this big humph about that, so there was a 'counter protest', defending the right for same-sex couples to be legally married in Canada. I kind of just went because I had never previously had the chance to attend a protest, so I thought I would check it out with a few of my art friends. my conclusion: protests are lame, pointless, and it is for lazy people who are there to fit into a box, and form hate barriers against people from "the other side"

it was so dumb, I felt like a sheep, and I HATE feeling like a sheep. we followed the leader and chanted the chants, "!PASS BILL C-38!...!HATE IS NOT A FAMILY VALUE!...!EQUALITY NOW!" ...boo

I felt like I was going through frosh all over again, that hellish time, having no voice of my own, being turned into a robot.

don't get me wrong, I am not saying that I didnt agree with what the activists were saying, I totally support it. but the way it was being done. outside of city hall, ON A SATURDAY WHEN THERE IS NO ONE IN THE BUILDING, AS GOVERNMENT WORKERS ARENT REQUIRED TO WORK ON SATURDAYS. DUMB. It was fecking freezing out, rain plus snow plus three inches of slush in my holey shoes absorbing into my pants and my neck.

So the crowd who were protesting the bill were forming their own 'hate society' and so were 'we'. I just felt so badly that I couldnt go over there and talk to them as people, there was now a stigma attached. ( I actually tried to go to the other side to ask a man to pet his dog, but he idnored me and kept on walking, not letting me pet the dog :/ ) I dont even know these people, but they have formed opinions about me, and i have about them, so there is a barrier between us. it was really sad.

seriously, its not like anyone is going to change their mind if you try and talk the issues through with each group, ONCE YOU DECIDE TO GO TO A PROTEST, YOU HAVE MADE UP YOUR MIND ABOUT THE ISSUE, SO IT IS OBVIOUS THAT YOU WILL STICK TO THE SIDE YOU HAVE DECIDED UPON. It's not like you go there to get your mind changed about the issue. and this is the same for both sides. so basically, you have just engaged in a war, if you think about it.

well, i think so at least.
