And Day 01 is "A show that never should have been canceled"

I do actually have a list here, so I'll touch on them all briefly, but the Big One is probably the most obvious thing ever.

1) Sports Night: This Aaron Sorkin series, predating The West Wing, is so freaking amazing. And ok, I'm not positive that it was actually canceled since I haven't done research into that recently, but this was definitely a show that was due for more. I love the cast of characters. This show has all the winning aspects of West Wing and in fact you see a few similar character backgrounds. Absolutely amazing show and one of the very few 1/2-hour episode shows that I own on DVD.

2) (Disney's) Gargoyles: I'm still not clear on the details of what happened after season 2, but the third season isn't really in-line with the original creator's vision - which is what gave rise to the awesome comics that continued in his intention. This is my favorite "serious" animated show.

3) (Disney's) Zorro: I'm rewatching this from the beginning right now on my lovely, lovely DVD boxsets and I'm again floored by just how awesome this series is. Apparently Disney and ABC had a legal dispute about who owned the series rights so a third season was trapped in stasis and by the time things were settled, Walt Disney decided Zorro had lost its huge fan success. Personally I could use some more story time. (Besides, seasons back in those days were 39 weeks! Isn't that frigging awesome?)

4) Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: I haven't finished this series yet, in part because it is very dark and often super depressing, and also due to the fact that I know it was canceled before its time; I know I'm going to be left wanting more. What I have seen of this show (a season and a half) is amazing. The characters fascinate me, I'm in love with Summer Glau as Cameron, and the whole question of humanity and good and evil and issues of determining what is the right thing to do... fascinating. These characters are flawed, the situation is dire, and goddamn are the stories dark. I've been stunned a few times by how devastating things can get.

5) And now the obvious choice: Firefly. So many unanswered questions and stories left unexplored. The comics don't fulfill near enough and in all honesty the film Serenity, while amazing, contradicts some established canon and was totally mistaken in its removal of certain characters. This show has so many good points it's near impossible to list them all off the top of my head. It had (and still has) such potential. The cast members are amazing, the characters in the verse are unbeatably cool, and the mix of the wild west and sci-fi future is just plain interesting! Firefly, I find it impossible to determine my favorite episode or favorite character.

The only good thing about these shows getting canceled is that they didn't really have time to go sour, jump the shark, go bad (however you wish to term it). I have a number of other series that I look at and grimace how things turned out, so I guess I'll do my best to look on the bright side and fulfill my addiction to these shows through fandom and fanfic. (In fact I'm off to read some Firefly fic right now...)
