CIVILIAN LIFE:

Q1. Name: Ashley Bradford

Q2. How did you find out about Elite of the Fleet? In an entry that [info]charlietinpants posted in [info]st_reboot.

Q3. When did you first become interested in Star Trek? I remember watching TNG with my mother when I was a child, but I was never really interested in Star Trek until I saw the Reboot around New Year’s. That’s when I got interested in TOS and am now obsessed, for lack of a better word.

Q4. Why have you decided to join Elite of the Fleet? Mainly to meet new people. I’ve been a loner for the majority of my life and now that I’m out of high school and not surrounded by people, I feel lonely. I want to meet new people that share the same passion in Star Trek.

Q5. Who is your favourite Star Trek character? I can’t say that I really have just one favorite character. I like a majority of TOS’s main cast with Spock, McCoy, and Scotty being my top three in no particular order.

Q6. And the least? Uhura from the reboot. I believe that JJ Abrams did not do her character justice and she is basically a Mary Sue personality put into the movie so that teenage boys will like the movie. Original Uhura is a different story. While she is not at the top of my list, I don’t dislike her.

Q7. Which television (or film) series is your favourite? I don’t know if I can pick a favorite. I suppose if I had to I would choose The Search for Spock would be my favorite movie and TOS is my favorite series.

STARFLEET LIFE:

Q8. What do you hope to gain from your service in Starfleet? Friends, experience, and inspiration. As I stated above, I’m lonely and in search of others I can share this new passion of mine with.

Q9. Is there any occupation in Starfleet you feel you would be particularly unsuited for? Anything related to violence I suppose. I can defend myself, if needed, but would rather not hurt or kill anyone if it can be avoided.

Q10. The four current Academic Tracks at the Academy are Tactics, Operations, Exploratory Sciences and Medical Sciences. Describe how you could be an asset to each of these departments.

Tactical: I’ll be the first to admit that I am horrible with directions. As some say, I would get lost in a dime store, even with a map! As for command, I have been a group leader in a few circumstances and everything went well. I admit that I am shy at first and prefer not to take control if I don’t have to, but I will if it is needed.
Operations: I love to talk, listen to other people’s opinions, and I work well with other people. If a dispute is going on and I have the power to help or hinder it, I’m going to do my best to fix the problem so that both parties are satisfied with the results. I have always been interested in other languages and have many a time attempted to sit down and learn some, but time is a horrible thing sometimes and I had to abandon my studies.
Exploratory Sciences: While in high school I took a variety of science classes from Physical Science to Ecology. Now, my strong points do not lie with the Mathematics, I did excessively well in Biology, Physical Science, and Ecology. I pride myself with being able to memorize facts quickly and being able to use them when needed. The study of planets and stars has been an interest of mine since childhood, as I have always wanted to visit new places.
Medical: While I don’t have the stomach to practice in general medical practices, I have always been very good in the Psychology portion of medicine. I have often been described as being empathic since I can usually take one look at a person and know what is going on. I am generally a caring person and love to listen and help people with the emotional struggles they face.

Q11. What are your top five strengths?

01. I am a very patient person. I can sit still and wait for anything for hours if that is what is called from me. I don’t like to rush things, unless needed, I prefer to work more slowly so that I don’t miss anything and can get the correct results.
02. People describe me as being very loyal. Once someone has my trust I am like a puppy to them. I will listen and follow every command, lend them an ear, never betray them, and even risk my life for them on many occasions.
03. I am a very good listener. I respect every person that is of a higher rank and follow orders to the best of my ability.
04. I am very persistent when it comes to getting things done on time. If there is a due date I will do my best and anything needed to get the task done on time.
05.I’m friendly and kind. I get along with just about everyone I meet even though I am shy at first. Once I get to know a person and get comfortable with them I can be almost anyone’s best friend.

Q12. What are your top five weaknesses?

01. I can be very insecure about myself. I pride myself on getting work done, but the entire time I am doing it and even after turning it in I question myself and my abilities until I get the final word back. I am currently in the process of helping myself not question my abilities as much and just go with what my heart and mind say.
02. I care far to much about the people I know. I would not be able to willingly send someone to their death even to save hundreds of others simply because the guilt would consume and destroy me from the inside. I am not able to make decisions that include the harm of others.
03. When I work, I am so focused and entranced by the project that sometimes I will simply forget to properly take care of myself. I can easily go a few days without food not because I want to, but because I simply forget to eat or sometimes even sleep because I simply want to complete my task on time.
04. It is very difficult, but possible, for me to stand up in front of a group of people and speak to them. Rather it be a motivational speech or just giving a report, I get very anxious about it.
05.Often in times of a crisis, I find myself thinking the worst of things is going to happen. Most times I am wrong, but I believe that if I think things out and consider all possibilities, even bad, I will be more prepared to handle or accept the situation.

Q13. What is your biggest fear? I am most afraid of losing the people that are closest to me. I myself am not afraid to die, death is a part of life, but I do not think I could go on knowing that someone I loved so much and someone that had such an impact on my life is gone and simply not coming back.

Q14. Do you consider yourself to be a leader, or a follower? Definitely a follower. Sure, in a pinch I can take over and command, but my own insecurities hold me back from truly being able to lead anyone. I am loyal beyond believe so I am most definitely a follower.

Q15. What do you admire the most in your peers? I admire those in leader positions and the charisma they possess. It all seems so easy to them that they don’t even break into a sweat. If I were in their position I know I would have a small panic attack, but leaders I know personally do everything so well in leading others so that everything is orderly and I sometimes envy them.

Q16. You are stranded on a Class M planet that has not been mapped by The Federation. You are only allowed to choose two of the following items to keep with you: a phaser, a tricorder or a communicator. Which two would you choose to have? Tricorder and a phaser. Since I am stranded, I will assume that I will not be rescued anytime soon. The tricorder would help me decide what plants were safe to eat, what liquids were safe to drink and so on. The phaser would be more than simply protection. I would use it to heat rocks for heat or to cook, boil water if needed, and (if possible) use it for hunting game for food.

Q17. Please describe your understanding of the Federation’s Prime Directive. The Prime Directive is what helps explorers from taking advantage of other races on planets by not getting involved or speeding up their technological developments. If we were to interfere with a young society, then instead of exploring their own cultures and beliefs they might take on ours and then their history would be forgotten.

Q18. The United Federation of Planets includes more than 150 member planets, and the galaxy has many more besides. Which planet do you most want to visit? Vulcan. I live in a very religious part on Earth’s Untied States and most of this religion is based on superstitions and unproven facts. I believe it to be fascinating that a culture can be based on logic and science instead of emotions like most of those on Earth and I would very much like to see how I as a Human would grow after being exposed to this interesting culture.

KOBAYASHI MARU:

The following questions describe situations you may commonly find yourself in as a member of Starfleet. You will be read the scenario, and then given two options to choose from. You may expand upon the reasons for your choice, but you must indicate one of the two that you feel best describes your likely response to the situation provided.

Q19. Service in the Fleet can be draining at the best of times, and on one particular day everything seems to have gone wrong. You’re exhausted, but your shift is finally over and it’s time to unwind. Your roommate is already on their bed when you get back to your quarters. Do you:

b. Say hi, then stick in some earphones for music or grab a PADD for some recreational reading. A lie-down sounds pretty good right now, or maybe a bit of time relaxing on the observation deck - it should be pretty quiet by this time, which will give you a chance to sort through the day’s events in your head.

Music helps me release stress and unwind from a hectic day. After such a busy day I usually just want to relax in my living space for awhile before even thinking of going out again. This way I can think through the events of the day with a clear mind and see just how everything went and if I’m happy with the day.

Q20. You’ve intercepted what sounds like a pretty important transmission - you feel like the Captain needs to know. When you report, do you:

a. Give them all the facts: what it said, what the voice sounded like, where the inflection was, the language it was in, and so on. Details and facts are the important part, everything else is subjective.

The captain didn’t hear the message, so I can’t assume he or she understand what all I’m talking about if I just give him or her the abridged version of the transmission. What the captain needs is facts so that he or she can make the most logical decision.

Q21. There are many decisions to be made in Starfleet, and some are harder than others. Faced with a decision where things could go wrong in any number of ways, do you:

a. Stay impersonal and objective. Weigh up the pros and cons, think out all the possibilities, and focus on the basic truths. A careful analysis of the situation will reveal the best possible choice, even though some may not approve of it.

In a command situation there is no room for doubts and I must make the decision that will get the job done and not worry about whose feelings are going to get hurt.

Q22. The day-to-day life of Starfleet can be quite arduous at times, and quite exciting at others. Everyone has their own way of approaching everyday work, but would others see your approach as:

a. Planned and orderly. You seem to prefer to have decisions made and matters settled, rather than hanging over your head. You appear comfortable when in control over such matters. You seem to be task-oriented, and plan ahead.

I like to know exactly how my day is going to go before I step out the door to face it. I know that not all things go as planned, but at least if you have an outline you can get back on tack faster than if you just take everything as it comes.

Q23. You can earn 5 points for your future Track by promoting the community in your Journal. Please link the post here if you wish to do so: ontic365.livejournal.com/4489.html
